GRAND MASTER’S CAT
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
GRAND MASTER’S CAT
The whine of a low flying spacecraft scored across the purple sky, and on the desert sands far below, a dark figure vanished. Vexed at the intrusion, Grand Master Griffin had thrown a cloak of invisibility around himself. Why was the ship intruding on this remote planet when he had deliberately chosen a site far from the normal routes for Space Corps flights?
The steady drone of the jet stuttered for a second and the small ship veered toward the mountains. The Grand Master’s eyes narrowed in speculation. Seconds later, a larger ship shot into sight, following the contrail of the first. Laser weapons flashed, sending the first ship into an evasive zigzag path. In the air between the two ships, an expanding blob of light showed the smaller victim was also armed. The supersonic bang came seconds later.
Dagda’s horn,
the Griffin muttered in annoyance. He had to discover the identities of the people fighting in the skies of this uninhabited world. Of course, the ships were traveling in the opposite direction to his planned destination. Still invisible to normal sight, the Grand Master raced across the open plain. His lengthy psi-assisted strides covered thousands of paces with minimal use of his power. At each step, the soles of his boots crushed the blue fungus carpeting the ground, releasing the odor of rotten eggs. Ignoring the stench, he leaped onward.
The two ships disappeared over the mountain peaks, while the distant sizzle of lasers marked their battle. A blast of light, followed by a loud boom, marked the explosion of one of the ships. The dull crunch of a ship hitting the ground was succeeded by an ominous silence.
Seething at the waste of his energy in a detour, the Griffin leaped from the squishy ground and zoomed into the air. He rose into the wispy clouds to surmount the jagged peaks. Someone might have survived the crash. Catching sight of the man flying over the snowcapped mountains, two gossamer-winged creatures wheeled away in alarm. On the far side of the summit, the Grand Master descended at the speed of an arrow toward the blazing wrecks of the ships. He landed on the gray stones near a sluggish river of black water. His grim features shimmered into his public disguise of a bland-faced man with short curly hair.
The red and black cross on the larger spacecraft marked a slaver shuttle. Grimacing in recognition, he understood the reason for the aerial battle. The smaller ship had fled from the slavers. In the fight, both ships had crashed on the rocky ground.
Ignoring the shrieks from the slaver
