    About the Book

Marriage is a contract by which two people become bound by rules and expectations; that goes without saying. It’s a union that is formalised on paper and authorised by signature. This book is about betrayal and being stuck in a loveless marriage, and illustrates that money and power are, unfortunately, the capital of most unsuccessful marriages. It shows that the person with whom you share a bed every night can turn out to be a complete stranger and how you can sacrifice almost anything to make your significant other happy. You learn that money cannot solve every problem and it cannot buy peace or happiness.

My advice – always take your time to get to know a person and understand him or her; money and success are only worth it if you have people who really love you by your side. Marriage was always meant to come only once in a person’s life, so pray to God to give you strength to live up to that principle. To those who have been married several times, there is absolutely nothing unacceptable about you - no man is saint. We all make mistakes, but what really matters is that we learn from them. The greatest advice is to speak to God about anything and everything.

    About the Author

Rachel Wray Makutu was born on the 12th of October 1994 and is the fifth of ten children. Her mother is a teacher and her father was self-employed. She grew up writing plays and directing them from a young age. She is now pursuing her dream of writing novels and stories in the hope that many may be able to relate to and find pleasure in reading them. She went to school in Warmbath but, after completing her Grade 12, she moved to Polokwane and, a year later, to Pretoria, where she currently stays. Her main objective is to major in Psychology and become one of the best authors in South Africa.

    Chapter 1

In the fall of 1994, a couple gave birth to a beautiful baby girl in Warmbath, South Africa. It is a small town, where everyone knows everyone and there is hardly anything kept private. The British-born couple, Connor and Emily Jessica Osborn, wanted nothing but the best of life for their daughter Christina. Connor had just moved to South Africa, when he and Emily met in 1992 at the University of Johannesburg and Emily, who’d been born in Rotherham, England, had grown up in South Africa.

After they were married, Connor worked as an attorney at Atkinson Attorneys Firm, while Emily was a stay-at-home mom. Connor was earning enough to support and sustain his family life, but he felt that the money was not enough, so he applied for better jobs and was even trying to come up with ways of making extra money on the side. He went to see an old family friend, Uncle Joshua, of whom his father and mother had been very fond and whom they had highly trusted. Uncle Joshua had also mentored and helped to raise Connor after both his parents died in a tragic accident, so he was more like a guardian than a family friend. He helped Connor start up a house-cleaning business, which was managed by his wife, and employed three other people as well.

Their motto: As long as dirt and grime exist, there will be a need for house-cleaning services attracted so many clients who owned luxurious country houses, beautiful apartments and offices around town. The Osborn Cleaning Service was doing well and kept Emily so occupied that she hired a nanny to look after Christina and to help around the house.

Not too long afterwards, Connor was made a partner in the firm, which vexed and provoked a lot of people, especially a young man named Eric Fourie. Eric Fourie was a 27-year-old, who was divorced and shared custody, with his ex-wife, of their 7-year-old son. His father, Benjamin Fourie, owned a quarter of the firm and Eric thought he would take over when his father retired, but his savvy father had different plans. Benjamin was warmly impressed by Connor’s work and attitude towards life and family. Anyone who knew Benjamin knew that he valued family more than anything else and, even though some might say that Eric was a failure and the black sheep of the Fourie family, Daddy Benjamin knew better than to give up on his only son. A function was held at the firm to congratulate the new partners and their great achievements.

Eric was enraged and nettled by Connor when he made a stand as the new partner and he didn’t even try to hide it. Connor came with his lovely wife, Emily, whom he introduced to Benjamin and other business associates, Eric stood up from the corner of the room and walked towards Emily with a deceitful smile, held her hand and introduced himself. That’s how Emily and Eric met.

Later that night, Eric saw an opportunity to approach Emily and talk to her. He asked her about her life and career and when Emily told him about her cleaning service business, Eric did not waste any more time and asked for a business card. Emily thought it was rather out of the ordinary because she knew that Eric did not get along with her husband, but she just brushed it off because she wasn’t one to ever say no to potential new business.

A week after the function Emily received a call from Eric, who delivered some good news - he wanted to sign up and asked Emily if she had room for three more clients. The four new clients including Eric, wanted to sign a 4-year contract with the Osborn Cleaning Services that was worth R720,000. Emily was elated; she hurriedly drew up the contract that evening. The Osborn Cleaning Service was growing daily, so Emily hired more people. Back at home things were going well, too. Connor was happier and spent every minute he could spoiling his lovely wife, taking her on extravagant dinner dates, buying her expensive jewellery and the most elegant baby items for their daughter.

At the Fourie household, however, things were spinning out of control. Eric and his father had an argument, which led to Benjamin suffering a minor stroke. He was rushed to a local, private hospital. His youngest daughter, Rose, flew in from the United States when she heard the news, to support her mother who was left devastated. This unfortunate incident caused a huge gap between the two siblings and created tension in the mansion. After all of this had happened, Eric started drinking heavily in local clubs, flashing money around and spending much of it on prostitutes, without any remorse; instead, he was filled with resentment and anger towards his father who, in his eyes, had betrayed him.

A week later, Benjamin was discharged from the hospital, but Eric did not wait for his father to arrive back home; he simply packed his clothes and left the house. He rented a 3-bedroom house in the same estate as the Osborn’s. The fact that he felt that his relationship with his father had been slain by this man - Connor Osborn - left him in a fury and ignited a passion for revenge; he intended to keep a very close eye on his enemy. Meanwhile, he grew very lonely and suffered a severe depression but, instead of seeking help, he developed a sickly-perverted obsession.

Eric would go to the gym just to watch women work out. He enjoyed every minute of it and it was a turn-on for him - women in their tight fits, stretching and bending, doing squats and crunches, with the sweat pouring off them, gave him an orgasm. He would also sneak into the change-rooms and try to peek as they changed and, when that did not give him an explorative view, he secretly put hidden, cordless cameras in the women’s changing area. He would surf the Internet for a variety of pornography and just sit at home all day watching it. His work was suffering and it was starting to show. He was given two written warnings and was later suspended. He was slowly drowning in debt, the bank repossessed his car and he was struggling to come up with money to pay for his house.

He reached out to his mother, asking her to cover his bills, but she refused and, instead, told him to come back home and resolve things with his father, but Eric was not prepared to take responsibility for anything, as always. Eric was drunk one night at a club, when he poured his sad story to a local mechanic, who suggested a way out of his financial problems. The mechanic told Eric to kill his father and collect the life insurance money. Eric laughed and said, I might just end up doing that, plus he is a useless old man; nobody would miss him. The next day Eric received a call from the mechanic, who asked for the go-ahead. Eric had just woken up with a terrible hangover and was puzzled by the mechanic’s request. A go-ahead for what? He was taken aback by what the mechanic said next. Eric told the mechanic that he had been drunk and did not remember half the things he had said, but the mechanic was not ready to give up. He manipulated Eric and gave him reasons why
