    Sheriff of Coco Point

Mick cruised slowly down the road, his black and white a welcome sight by the residents of Coco Point, most days. His brown eyes surveyed the rural areas as well as the well-heeled suburbs. Most of the time nothing ever happened around Coco Point. To his right stretched the curve of sand leading to the point, and in the distance he could make out the figures of a few early morning walkers. Seagulls glided low over the water, searching for their breakfast, their shrill calls echoing on the wind. The water reflected the color of the nearly cloudless sky; iridescent blues and aquamarine tumbled slowly through by the frothy white of the churning waves. The air carried the dampness that hovered over the beaches, chilling his skin. Despite the chill, he rolled the windows down, allowing the scent and sounds of the sea to rustle through the vehicle. Unconsciously he shifted his equipment belt, settling the revolver more comfortably against his right hip.

His mind held no clear thoughts, only the impressions of the timeless forces of nature that surrounded him. He felt totally insignificant and yet completely at peace. And felt more at home than he ever had. Nevertheless it felt right to be here, and he accepted it with equanimity, as he had been trained to face all the circumstances life presented him. However, Mick knew that could change at any given time. Most of the residents of the small seaside town were either basking in the early sunshine or having breakfast. He had been up since almost 5am. He always did the 6am to 3:30pm watch, namely because not many of his fellow officers liked the day watch preferring night duty, especially his dad. Ever since the death of his mother a few years ago, he knew that his dad preferred the night duties to alleviate the loneliness and the emptiness of the house they shared. Now it was just Mick and his dad who lived in it. As homes go, it was in the well-heeled district. His father, though a Captain in Coco Point Police Station, had decided when Mick was young that his son would grow up in a good neighborhood and go to a good school and a good University, if he had to be a cop all his life. He had worked hard and accomplished all that, however it really told on his wife. When she died of Cancer a few back, Mick knew his dad had been upset because he thought he should have spent more time with his wife. Yet Mick knew his mom would never have wanted that. Coco Point was literally a retirement town. People either retired here or they wanted someplace quiet and away from the general hubbub of city life.

Mick had gone to the University of Miami and studied Law and Criminology. After graduating top of his class he was snapped up by the FBI to work on their task force. Unfortunately a couple of years later his mother died and he resigned from the Task Force and joined the local Sheriff’s Office, run by his dad. He and his dad had had many arguments about what he considered a career move. Mick wanted to be a patrol Officer and his father wanted him to go back to the Task Force. Eventually his dad had given in and assigned him a Black and White patrol car. Now he patrolled what he considered his neighborhood. He preferred general police work anyway.

    ~oOo~

Faith sat on the edge of the bridge railing; staring at the water running 10 meters under the bridge and thought of her life up until that point. She was making a drastic decision for herself and the more she thought about it the better she started feeling. The waters eddied on down the stretch between there and the shores of Coco Point about a mile downriver.

People had told Faith that she was a beautiful angel of a girl. And she supposed in some ways it was true, she had a heart shaped face, framed by golden honey shoulder length hair. Big ocean blue eyes framed by thick black lashes. A small nose and a cupid mouth, which had been pouting as of late. She had a figure most models would die for, hourglass her mother had once told her. Oh she missed her parents so much. However, soon she would be with them, just as she should have been when they died. She went back to that day and wished she could have taken back the horrible things she had shouted at them when they left to go visit her brother’s widow.

She wished she had gone with them instead of being forced to stay behind as they had insisted. Now she would never ever be able to say she was sorry. She had wanted them to come and see her new art show exhibit and Maria had wanted them to go and see her on the same day. Faith demanded that they stay as it was only a one-day exhibit and they could have gone to see Maria anytime. But her dad had put his foot down and told her to stop acting so childishly. Oh, and Faith knew she was acting like a brat. But ever since her brother had died a year ago, she had been the only child and she used it to her best advantage. Spoiled rotten, her parents now doted on her. But they would never dote on her ever again. After the train had hit the car and killed her beloved parents, Faith fell apart. She had spent half a year in therapy trying to cope with the fact that they were gone and never coming back. Maria moved on after the accident and she was now married to someone else and had moved back to San Bernardino. Faith was on her own. Her parents left her a lot of money, a house and a beautiful cottage in Coco Point.

Faith had sold the house and moved to Coco Point, becoming almost a recluse. She didn’t paint anymore. She spent hours looking out of the window of the cottage. It overlooked the town and the expanse of beautiful beach. The road leading down to town went over a bridge called the Bridge of Sighs. Aptly named. When the wind blew over the town and whistled its way through the bridge structure, it sounded like the bridge was sighing. Lately Faith had been looking at the bridge and doing her own sighing. What good was money when you had no one to share it with? She looked at herself in the bedroom mirror that morning. She was 24 years old and feeling like an old maid. Most of the neighbors around her were old folk. The beach lately had been devoid of surfers. Since Pennington had opened their beautiful beach to surfers, the rush by the local youngsters there had been complete. Faith felt old. She was also feeling sorry for herself.

    Nobody cared anyway.

That was why she decided to end it all. Then she would never feel lonely ever again.

She gripped the bridge post and climbed up and stood up on the railing. It was a giddy feeling and she felt her legs wobble a little on the bridge ledge. She decided that she didn’t want to see herself fall, instead the last thing she wanted to see was the beautiful blue sky above. So she turned around and faced the opposite side of the bridge.

She heard a screech of brakes to her right and turned to see a police car slam to a stop and a cop leaping out of his car. A look of horror on his face and she heard him shout, NO!! Get off the bridge.

She gave him no more thought other than, ~what a shame. He’s a good-looking guy.~

She let go and fell backwards off the ledge towards the water below.

    ~oOo~

Mick drove up the long lane towards the Bridge of Sighs. He knew the story of the Bridge of Sighs and he actually enjoyed the view from the bridge. It was beautiful. The bridge wasn’t too far up, maybe about 10 meters from the water. As he came up to the bridge, a girl standing on the ledge of the bridge caught his attention. A pretty pixie like girl with the saddest face he had ever seen. Horrified he knew exactly what she planned and he screeched to a halt and leaped out his car and yelled, NO. Get off the bridge.

But she let go and fell backwards. With an audible curse, Mick threw his holster and radio off and ran towards the place she had dropped off. He peeled off his jacket as he ran, and then grabbing the railing leapt over it down to the waters below.

Warm water flowed over him as he hit the river below. He sank for a second and then thrashed his way to the top gasping for air. He looked around for the area where the girl might have hit. Then he saw a ripple of water and bubbles. He swam hard and then dived under the water looking for an outline of the girl under the murky water. He finally spotted her and swam towards her and reached down, gripped her unconscious form in one hand and hauled himself and her up to the surface.

Breaking the surface, he hauled her up with him and then made for the shore. He lay panting on the shore a few seconds and then hauled her up and began CPR on her to get her to cough up the water from her lungs. ~Damn ~ he thought. ~What is a pretty girl like this trying to kill herself for? ~

The pretty girl felt air in her lungs and water and began to choke and splutter. Who had pulled her out? Why?

Then she was turned around and her back thumped hard to get rid of the water she had inhaled. Coughing, and with a strength she didn’t know she had, Faith turned round and shoved the man hard away from her.

She turned red strained eyes towards him and snapped, Who gave you the right to stop me? This is my life to do with as and what I feel like doing it with.

Mick, pleased that the girl was going to be
