About this ebook

Red Rock was gorgeous, no doubt about it, hot but gorgeous. Vivian's fossil site on Turtlehead Mountain was more beautiful than most.

Not that it mattered if she couldn't get her fossil out of the field without it shattering into rainbow glitter and tiny shards.

One week left and they'd be gone for the season. Vivian had to get her fossil out, no matter what.

Her boyfriend Ash wasn't going to stop her. Her secret crush and best friend Iman could warn her off all she liked. Even Professor Angel wasn't going to stop Vivian.

The unicorns, though?

They might just stop Vivian. Or they might help.

If Vivian was really lucky she might even survive the encounter.

    Fossil History

Vivian panted as she scrambled up to the fossil site. Red Rock was gorgeous, no doubt about it, hot but gorgeous. Especially around Turtlehead Mountain. The bare valley with its scrub-dotted plains looked, at this height, like the platform for a model train set. An old west one with a fake steam locomotive puffing as it pumped along the tiny tracks .

Up here, above the others' dig sites, Vivian could smell more than the dust and plaster they'd all gotten coated with as the dig wound towards its inevitable end. The smell of the honey mesquite mixed with the scrubby juniper curled around the boulder to her left. Purple sage grew up here, too, peeking out from damper spots where water seeped towards the surface as it made its way down into the valley. Nothing smelled like Red Rock or looked like it.

One week left and they'd be gone for the season. Too soon by far. Vivian still had three sites she'd wanted to get to but hadn't. Just like always, the mountains were full of things to investigate and dig up.

Of course, the mountains in the distance weren't anything her uncle could have created for his train sets. Bands of brown, tank and brilliant red rock swept across the mountains as far as Vivian could see. Up high, near the top of the mountains would be shattered larger fossils. Down deep, near the base, she wasn't likely to find much of anything. Too easy there. They'd already been picked over this summer.

Not that Vivian cared about the older sites on the far side of the valley. Her site was better. Harder to get to, sure, but still better. She shifted her feet, sending a shower of sand and crumbled rock down towards Ash and Rashmi, working down near the base of the cliff with Professor Angel.

No, don't call her that. Even thinking it was a bad idea. She'd smack Vivian if Vivian slipped and used Professor Nascimbene's first name. Tall as
