    Sohni Mahiwal

Once upon a time during the late Mughal period, there was a town on the banks of River Chenab, there used to live a potter named Tulla. The town has been identified either as present-day Gujarat or one of the nearby towns. Tulla was a master craftsman who belongs to Kumhar caste and his earthenware was famous due to which his work was bought and sold throughout far Northern India and even exported to Central Asia. The potter and his wife soon became parents of a beautiful daughter. The potter and her wife were very happy that the God had blessed them with such a beautiful daughter. She was such a beautiful child that they named her Sohni which means beautiful in Punjab language.

Sohni spent her most of the time in childhood playing and observing things in her father’s workshop. She watched everything from starting till the end like pots being made from clay and shaped on the wheel, dried in the sun and then fired and baked in the furnace.

As time passes, Sohni grew up to be not only a beautiful and attractive young lady but also an accomplished artist like her father, She used to make floral designs on the pots and pitchers that came off her father’s wheel.

Sohni’s town was located on the trading route between Delhi and Central Asia and so it was very common for the trading caravans passed through it. Like many caravans, one such caravan that made a stopover included a handsome and charming young trader whose name was Shahzada Izzat Baig who was a rich trade man from Uzbekistan and had come to Punjab, particularly for trade purposes and stayed for some time in Gujarat.

One day during his stay, when Izzat Baig was in town so he decided to buy some merchandise. So he went on town’s market and started searching for something, while checking out the merchandise in the market Izzat Baig want from one shop to another but found nothing interesting and finally came upon Tulla’s shop, he entered the shop like a regular person and started searching for something interesting and different which could impress or fascinate him, while he was checking out the merchandise Izzat Baig spotted young and beautiful Sohni sitting in a corner of the shop painting beautiful floral designs like herself on the earthenware.

Izzat Baig immediately came under the influence of Sohni’s magical rustic beauty and charm and he couldn’t take his eyes off her and why not she was such a beauty. It was a love at first sight for Izzat Baig. So in order to stay in the shop for a longer period of time and to stay near her, Izzat Baig started pretending to buy some random pieces of mugs and pitchers but his all attention was on taking a glimpse of Sohni’s beauty and after some time he buoyed some mugs and pitchers and returned back home. Izzat Baig was in his home but could not get Sohni out of his head. So next day, early morning, Izzat Baig returned to the shop with the intention to stay around Sohni for as long as possible, instead of looking after the Mohars (gold coins), he roamed with his pocket full of love and made some more purchases at Tulla’s shop as he was pretending to be regular customer in shop. But his purchases were a pretext to be around Sohni for as long as he could. And this became Izzat Baig’s daily routine and just to get a glimpse of Sohni he spends most of his money on buying unnecessary pieces of mugs and pitchers from Tulla’s shop and soon left with very little.

When the time came for his caravan to leave, Izzat Baig found it impossible for him to leave Sohni’s town as he doesn’t want to get separated from Sohni, for him it was love at first sight and he wanted to marry her and take her with him. So to stay for more time in town, he told his companions to leave without him and carry on and he would follow them later. And after this, he
