    Whisper - Ann Snizek

    Part ONE

Too loud! Everyone was too loud, loud enough to wake Dorthe from a deep sleep. She’d asked them several times to keep it down. Since they all shared the same space, the least they could do was respect her attempts to sleep at night.

Flipping to her other side, she pulled the pillow over her head in an attempt to ignore them all and get back to some level of rest. It didn’t work, but then it never did when they got this loud. She lay there for as long as she could manage. It obviously didn’t matter that this was the first storm-free night all week or that she’d stayed up for thirty hours straight before crawling into bed only two hours ago.

Out of frustration, Dorthe pulled the pillow clear, flipped back over, and slammed the pillow onto the bed. She fumbled with the light switch, trying to get the light on as quickly as possible. The indistinct jumble of voices she heard every day of her life just wouldn’t shut up.

    She’s awake, one voice said.

It's almost time, another chimed in.

Then tell her, a third voice said angrily.

Dorthe finally got the light on and felt the pull of the shadows that desperately fled the harsh glow. She felt the pain and anger the light caused them. It didn’t stop her though. What stopped her was the realization that she'd understood some of the words... from three distinct voices. Her heart pounded against her ribs, climbing its way up to her throat as she sat motionless, waiting to see if the clear voices would return.

Anxiously she reached over, grabbed the large prescription bottle, and slid the single pill from its container. At the age of thirteen, her parents took her to a psychiatrist referred by the adoption agency and started her on a journey from one shrink to the next. But then, she didn’t really remember any of her life before then.

    The familiar hiss
