    1 – Assignments Please

    Yes! Sign up day finally arrived. Mrs. Songbrite pinned the paper to the board, smoothed it, and sighed happily before walking away. For some reason Sassi liked the quirky drama teacher. The dangling paper called to Sassi, begging her to sign up for the annual 7 th and 8 th grade drama & talent expo before anyone else. Mrs. Songbrite only allowed three singing acts each year and Sassi loved to sing.

    Digging for a pen, to make sure no one could erase her name this year, Sassi ignored the flow of students shifting around her in the hall. Only the pen mattered. Grasping the slender tube of her favorite purple pen, Sassi looked up in time to see Sarah and her pack moving closer. Sarah Prichett won last year after taking Sassi’s spot. Sassi wouldn’t let it happen again. Moving with determination, she scrawled her name – Sassi Kay Lyons – in the first vacant line, nodded with satisfaction, and rushed off to catch the bus.

    I signed up with pen this time, Sassi told her mom that night at supper.

    How many others signed up? her mom asked.

    I don’t know, she said with an almost indifferent shrug. I was first. She glowed with a grin of excited anticipation plastered across her face. It’s not like I stuck around to watch, mom.

    The next day, the intercom squeaked and the thump of someone tapping the microphone echoed throughout all the classrooms. Morning announcements began then Mrs. Songbrite was introduced for a special announcement and the chatter from the students settled down. The talent and drama expo was almost as exciting as dances.
