    Werelove #4 - Lakisha Spletzer

    Prologue

    Monday, 1:30 pm

    Gayleanah, Alask Territory

The light from outside did nothing to dispel the cold of the cave's interior. Not that the cloaked visitor cared. The message that needed to be delivered couldn't wait.

Up ahead, the gradual increasing luminosity of the meeting cavern's interior light chased away the shadows of the corridor.

    Halt! Who dares enter uninvited?

The visitor stopped, straightened and announced in a ringing tone, I am Mya. I come with news for the Council. Specifically for Ruhigen Jager.

The stirring and surprised murmuring of the room's inhabitants washed over Mya, who stood her ground.

    Let her through.

Mya shivered. That deep bass rumble meant the Meister's Head was in attendance. Not good, she thought as she glided by the sentries and strode to the center of the room.

    Speak.

Meister Wilhelm, the serpent has left its nest and is taking the hawk's egg with it.

Mya flinched at the bellows of outrage at her announcement. She waited until the noise died down before speaking once more.

Meister, what would you have me do?

The burly, balding council head grinned and fear danced down her spine.

    Retrieve the egg.

    I understand, my Meister.

    And, Mya?

    Yes, my Meister?

Give your big brother my regards.

Mya twitched, but kept her expression emotionless. Yes, my Meister.

She bowed and hurried from the room. She only made it as far as the second corridor when a willowy figure blocked her path. Mya's gaze swung to the person's face and she relaxed.

Mya crossed her arms and chided, Ruhigen Jager, you scared me!

If I gave you fear, then you need to bolster your spirit.

Mya grimaced. She didn't need another lecture.

Well, I'm off. She waved and turned to continue on her way.

She halted when Ruhigen Jager's hand touched her shoulder. She didn't move, but listened softly to the whispered words.

Mya, bring back my prey, and I'll reward you for the assist.

Mya grinned, a pleased growl escaping her lips.

    You've got yourself a deal.

With a smirk and a final wave, she shifted into panther form and bounded away, her mind on the hunt that lay ahead of her.

    LATE JUNE 2222

    Chapter 1

    Saturday, 1 am

    New Yor City, Yor Territory

Yon glanced down at his unconscious mate. She had been that way for the entire flight to his corporate office in New Yor City. He wasn't concerned. Her unguarded expression while asleep was fascinating to see.

Watching her vain attempts at defying him were amusing and a nice diversion while he conducted business.

::My Alpha, we will be landing in five minutes,:: the Omega pilot informed him.

Yon smirked. Across from him, his Beta, Miguel, glared. Miguel had awakened midway through the trip. He was currently gagged and bound.

The fury shining in Miguel's eyes was laughable. Why the younger male thought he could bite the hand that cared for him was a mystery. It was one Yon eagerly looked forward to solving, even if it meant losing his Beta.

::We're here, my Alpha. Landing now.::

The heli set down, and the Omega opened the door. Daemyn and Clyde stood. They hauled Miguel and Roberto upright and dragged them down the heli's stairs.

Yon followed, cradling Laylah in his arms. She was such a lightweight that it felt like he had nothing in his arms at all. He didn't want a scrawny wife. He would have to talk to Anna about fattening up Laylah. He had appearances to maintain, and if she stayed too thin, people would think she was being starved. He couldn't have that perception floating around.

The Omega rushed to the rooftop door and hastily opened it. His Betas forced the brothers inside and Yon entered last. His New Yor HQ building was the largest of his four corporate offices.

They rode the elevator down to the tenth floor which housed his office and the other senior managers' offices. No one was in the building at the moment, which suited his purpose just fine.

He strode into his office and laid Laylah on top of his empty desk. He checked her pulse. She was still out cold. That was fine. He would take care of his disobedient Beta and younger brother first.

Clyde and Daemyn shoved the two brothers onto their knees at Yon's feet. Yon smirked at the defiance gleaming in Miguel's eyes. The boy certainly had spirit, he'd give him that. Too bad he was going to shatter it.

Where did you think you were going with my wife?

Far away from you and your torture, Miguel snarled, his eyes shifting to wolf in his rage.

Stupid pup. There is nowhere you can hide from me. Yon let some of his Alpha power fill the air.

Clyde kicked Roberto in the ribs, knocking the younger male over. Roberto twitched and let out a whimper. Miguel lunged but was knocked down by Daemyn.

No one told you to move from your Alpha's feet, Boy, growled Daemyn.

I refuse to serve an Alpha who hurts females!

With a nod from Yon, Daemyn rained down several hard blows on Miguel. Miguel barely managed to keep from howling his pain. For a brief moment, Miguel's resolve impressed Yon.

As much as I would like to stay and play with you, I have other more pressing matters to attend to.

Yon walked over to the desk and ran his finger down Laylah's face and toward her chest. He grinned when he heard Miguel's enraged growl.

Such a beautiful wife I have. Daemyn. Clyde. Take the trash downstairs and do something about it. I'm going to spend some quality time with my female.

    Bastard!

Yon felt Miguel move. He didn't even turn around as he lashed out with his Alpha power, catching the younger male with it and sending him flying into the nearest wall. He smiled as he heard some of Miguel's bones break.

Daemyn, get him out of here. Make sure they can't move for a while. I'd like some quiet in the building.

    Yes, my Alpha.

Yon ignored Roberto's fearful whimpering and Miguel's injury-induced snarls. The door closed, and he turned his attention back to his mate. He would unravel the puzzle of Laylah, one way or another. He scooped her back up in his arms and headed off to the side office where he kept a spare bed. He put her in it and left, locking it behind him.

She would sleep for a while yet and the lock was voice activated, insuring that she would remain confined within and that no one could release her except for himself. Pleased with everything, he headed for his office to make calls.

Two hours later, his people had gathered, and he conducted an impromptu report session over the events of the last twenty-four hours. When it ended, Yon sat there and studied his gathered staff. Clyde, Daemyn, Aldrid, and Anna watched him, awaiting his orders.

After a moment, he finally gave them, dismissing them to carry out his directives.

In the silence, he sat back and contemplated the report from Clyde and Daemyn about Laylah's surprising display of power at the Jaksenville mansion.

    * * *

    Previous night, Friday, 10:15 pm

Clyde ran swiftly in a southwest direction toward the heart of the forest surrounding Yon's lands. The scent of the traitorous Miguel was in his nose. He would enjoy ripping the younger male to pieces. No one disrespected his Alpha. No one, especially not one of his own Betas.

::Clyde, I can sense Lady Laylah's presence.::

::Your connection to her is stronger than mine, Daemyn. I will defer to your judgment on that matter.::

::Remember, no one is to hurt Lady Laylah or cause her too much distress. That is our Alpha's orders,:: Daemyn informed the group.

Clyde ignored his partner, intent on catching Miguel. He found the change of direction and howled his triumph. He led the charge through the trees and into the small clearing. To his left, he felt Daemyn bombarded Lady Laylah's mind with enough force to cause her to whimper aloud at the intrusion.

Including himself and Daemyn, seven other Betas had come to assist in the hunt for the traitor and the enemies of their Alpha. He glared at Laylah and saw her flinch. He enjoyed the fear that filled her gaze when she realized that he was leading the pack in his Alpha's absence. Miguel and Roberto were tense, which was fine, too. That would make them do foolish things. He would use that to his advantage.

Please let us go, she implored. We'll never come back or bother Alpha Yon ever again!

::Don't make me laugh, silly girl. You are my Alpha's mate, and your behavior is a disgrace to his name.::

    Clyde, please, I'm begging you!

He lunged at her. ::No more talk!::

Laylah screamed and backed up. Roberto and Miguel were there in an instant, taking the brunt of the impact. Clyde refused to be denied and snapped at their faces.

No! Roberto, Miguel, look out! Laylah yelled.

Clyde was not impressed with the way the two brothers tried to keep him from Laylah. He wasn't really worried about her. His job was to hurt the brothers badly. He wasn't allowed to kill them. That was Alpha Yon's right.

::You two curs are going to pay for disrespecting our Alpha,:: he promised.

Clyde charged. Miguel snarled and shifted into a wolf and ran toward him.

    Laylah yelled, Miguel, watch out!

Clyde ignored Laylah as he went for Miguel's vulnerable belly.

An eerie silence descended as the two of them fought tooth and claw to destroy the other. Clyde wouldn't have had it any other way. This was what it meant be Were. Glory to his Alpha!

Abruptly, Clyde rolled and Miguel, confused by the sudden move, lost his concentration and was bowled over by Daemyn who had joined the fight.

Not fair! Laylah struggled to break Roberto's grip on her.

Clyde moved aside and let Daemyn have a go at punishing Miguel, who was already limping from the bites given by Clyde

::I had things under control, Daemyn.::

::I know, but this is taking too long. I know you like to play with your food but our Alpha is almost to us.,:: Daemyn admonished him. He rammed Miguel hard and the younger male was knocked off his feet.

Clyde leaped over Daemyn and snapped his jaws over Miguel's throat.

    ::Hunt is over. You lose!::

::Never!:: Miguel snapped, but his voice sounded weak.

    Let him go.

Clyde startled at the hissed words and turned his head to see who had spoken. In his shock, he released Miguel. He heard the yelps of fear and smelled the rising confusion and terror from the other Betas.

::What in the hell!::Daemyn's voice was tinged with shock as he backed up to stand by Clyde's side.

Lady Laylah stood alone, her body glowing a faint blue. Her eyes had shifted as had her hands. They were panther claws.

    ::Milady?::

It was as if Daemyn's voice released her from her frozen state. She let out a hair-raising panther yowl and was on them before they had time to move. She was a whirlwind of slashing claws and hissing snarls. Clyde and the other Betas scattered out of her reach.

::What is she?:: demanded Borka, who howled in pain when Laylah's claws cut into his flank.

::I don't know. No one told us she could shift!:: Clyde growled, spun and tried to avoid the enraged Laylah.

He wasn't fast enough. She bowled him over and her claws raked down his chest toward his belly. He snapped at her face. Laylah flinched and Daemyn knocked her off Clyde, growling and nipping at her. He was rewarded for his efforts with a slash to his side and ribs.

    Miguel ran toward them. Laylah!

Clyde didn't know when the whelp had changed to human, and he didn't care. Miguel's interruption was a welcome opening to the fight.

Laylah froze, her head whipping around. Miguel? her voice was faint.

Clyde and Daemyn, along with the other seven Betas converged on Laylah. ::Take her down while she's distracted. Remember not to mar her.:: Clyde ordered.

He felt their assent. They took a collective step but paused when Laylah abruptly fainted and collapsed to the ground.

    ::Clyde? Did you do something?::

::It wasn't me. I thought you did it, Daemyn.::

    ::Nope.::

::Doesn't matter. Borka, Jai, grab the traitors and bind them. We need to get ready for our Alpha's arrival.::

::Understood, Clyde.:: Jai and Borka shifted and using their combined Beta power, pinned the brothers to the ground. They quickly and efficiently tied and gagged them.

::Now that we're finished, there's nothing left to do but wait.::

Clyde wasn't looking forward to talking to his Alpha. He wasn't sure if he would even be able to explain all this. One thing was for certain, it had been a very interesting night.

    * * *

    Saturday, 4:30 am

    Yon's HQ, New Yor City

Yon was jolted from his thoughts by his e-comm going off. Frowning, he answered it. He was mildly surprised to hear Henry's voice.

When were you going to call me and update me on my daughter's condition?

"When I felt it was time for you to know, Alpha."

He could almost feel Henry bristle on the other end. Reports are already flooding in that you were attacked and that people were injured. It is only the courteous thing to do to let me know how my daughter is faring. I want to see her later today.

Yon almost laughed. Who did Henry think he was dealing with? He wasn't some lowly Gamma that Henry could boss around. It was time to put the other Alpha in his place.

If anything worthy of your concern had happened, I would have contacted you. As it is, this is an in-house matter and none of your business. You are not needed and visits are unnecessary.

    Now see here, Yon...

And you have a good night too, Henry. Yon disconnected the call.

He leaned back in his chair and grinned. Henry was probably howling in rage and that suited Yon just fine. He was Alpha and Henry would learn his role in Yon's plans when he felt it prudent to do so.

He needed to plan his next move. He wasn't too worried that Donil and his ragtag bunch of allies would be mounting any kind of counterattack. No, they would be busy licking their wounds. He grinned at that thought. Yes, everything was going according to his plans.

    Chapter 2

    Saturday, 10:30 am

Servicorps HQ, Ohcale, New Florida Territory

The e-comm's blinking message was bright on the screen in front of Henry's face. Again, no answer. He had been calling since the early morning hours. After the initial call to Yon, the other Alpha had not bothered to call back.

Henry slammed his fist down on his desk and glared at nothing. How dare Yon cut him out of the loop! He had a right to know how his asset was doing. Jerking up his e-comm, he placed a call to his mother.

Cecily answered on the first ring. Henry, is something wrong?

This is what he loved about his mother. Always to the point.

We have a problem. Yon's Jaksenville property was attacked by Silentshadow and his allies. Our spy also informed me that one of Yon's Betas was attempting to help Laylah escape.

Cecily sucked in a breath. Seriously? Which one?

His youngest one, a boy named Miguel. That Beta and his younger brother were caught in the act of fleeing the property with Laylah.

Well, this certainly is an interesting turn of events. What would you like to do, my son?

I'm thinking that we should invoke the marriage clauses. I need to rein Yon in. If we don't gain control now, everything we've been working on for the last twelve years is going to go up in smoke.

We can't let that happen, Henry. Too much time, money, and effort, has gone into this project. Everything is ready on my end. We can move at any time.

Good. Most of my loose ends are tied up as well. I will wait on invoking the clauses. That will be the last hand I play. The easiest way to avoid an obstacle is to go around it. If I do it right, Yon is easy to get by.

This is why I love your mind, my son. Always planning. Before I go, Henry, there is one more thing to keep in mind.

    Oh?

My spies in the New Florida Council are reporting that Isabella is holding secret meetings and marshaling her allies. Something big is about to happen. Possible shake-ups in the members of the Council. Remain wary. I'm confident she doesn't know of your plans, my son. But it is better to be prepared, just in case.

I agree. I have contingency plans ready as a back-up.

Then I have nothing else to worry about. Have a good day, my son.

Henry sat and pondered his course of action in the silence following the call. He was a master at games of strategy. He was playing the biggest one of his life and he refused to fail. He smirked and reached for an el-padd. It was time to get busy.

    Chapter 3

    Saturday, 8 pm

Dayid's Build and Innovation HQ, New Yor City

Yon, flanked by Clyde and Daemyn, strode down the long corridor to the basement entrance. Yon had spent most of the day doing damage control from the attack by his enemies.

There hadn't been much, which was surprising. If it were he, Yon would have gone for the jugular while achieving his goal of stealing what he came for. Just went to show how immature and incompetent Alpha Silentshadow really was.

He paused before the door and smirked. He opened it and went in. To his left, chained to the wall, were the disobedient pups. Yes, he really was going to have to teach them a lesson. No Beta would ever attempt anything of this magnitude ever again once he was done with the Garcia brothers.

    Hello, curs.

Miguel didn't speak, but glared while Roberto whimpered.

Yon came all the way into the room and stopped a foot away from Miguel. Is that anyway to greet your Alpha?

Miguel's eyes narrowed but he didn't speak. Roberto scooted closer to his brother. Yon almost laughed. The younger brother was showing proper fear. His former Beta, however, was a different story.

I guess the lesson didn't stick, did it?

Only silence greeted Yon's question. Yon felt a moment of irritation at Miguel's quietness. Did the boy want to die that badly?

Well, since your mouth doesn't seem to want to work, how about we do something to fix it? Clyde, Daemyn. Help Miguel out.

With pleasure, my Alpha, growled Clyde, who took two steps from Yon's side and kicked Miguel hard in the ribs.

Miguel grunted and covered his mid-section, the speed of his breathing changed as he tried to remain stoic. Clyde didn't stop. He merely switched sides and kicked.

Yon smiled when he heard the crack of Miguel's bones breaking. He would enjoy every bit of pain the younger male was about to suffer.

::Clyde, continue. I want him to talk and bleed and not necessarily in that order.::

    ::Yes, my Alpha.::

Wretch, your Alpha wants to know why you were trying to run off with his mate.

Getting her away from your abuse! spat Miguel. Taking her some place where you can't hurt her, you coward!

Coward? Is that the best you can come up with? You really need to expand your vocabulary, boy.

Yon crouched and put his face directly in front of Miguel's. He stared at him for a long time before standing.

I think you're lying. Daemyn, since brothers share everything, give Roberto his share of Miguel's punishment.

No, leave him alone! snarled Miguel. He lunged at Yon, only to be brought up short by the silver chain around his neck and a hard kick to his stomach from Clyde.

Kids these days. No manners. Daemyn, proceed.

    With pleasure, my Alpha.

Roberto's scent of fear filled the room, and Yon inhaled it. He lived for these moments.

Ignoring Miguel's howls of rage and Roberto screams of agony, Yon watched as his two Betas beat the brothers into unconsciousness.

Now, I do believe, I have a mate to go question. Yon sighed. Really, all he had to do was be honest.

Ignoring the prone figures on the floor, he turned and left as quietly as he had arrived with his two faithful Betas following him.

    * * *

    Saturday, 9:30 pm

    14th Floor, Visitor's Suite

No matter where she looked, only darkness greeted her. She was alone.

    Not alone, cub.

She recognized that voice. It was the feline voice that guided her along with the wolf voice. Why she hadn't understood that when they first started talking to her more than two years ago, she'd never know.

I've lost everything. I’m back in the hell I tried to escape. Miguel and Roberto....

Laylah's words trailed off as she choked on her emotions. She felt useless. She hadn't been able to protect anybody or even contribute to the fight.

Not true. You’re just feeling sorry for yourself.

Ah, right on cue. That familiar growl of annoyance as if she shouldn't be such a whiner.

Maybe I want to whine, she muttered.

The feline chuckled while the wolf's growl increased in tempo.

    Sorry! I’ll behave.

Good. You are not a bad pup. You need training.

Training? Yeah, that would be good, except the only ones to offer it were nowhere near, and if Yon kept her hostage, she'd never get to learn.

We will escape and you will take them with you.

Of course! I wouldn’t even think of leaving Miguel and Roberto. I’m not heartless.

She felt a moment of irritation. How dare the wolf think her cruel! She would never leave anyone behind to suffer at Yon's hands.

He is here! You must wake and fight, snarled the feline.

Yon was here? No! She didn't want to see him. Didn't want to....

    * * *

    Saturday, 9:45 pm

    Wake up, wife.

Laylah's eyes fluttered open, her mind having already acknowledged his presence. She really didn't want to look at him.

    Too slow.

Her eyes jerked wide, and she yelped as the Alpha's call ripped into her, demanding compliance. She curled into a ball and whimpered, her hands clapped ineffectively to her ears.

You still haven't learned, Feral. You can't block a call. It's impossible.

She turned her head to the left and glared at the gloating Clyde. She despised him the most of Yon's Betas.

My Alpha, I don't think the Feral is showing you enough respect.

I agree. Get out of the bed, Mate.

Laylah hesitated, and it cost her. The call increased and suddenly doubled when Daemyn joined in. She screamed her agony, temporarily immobilized by the onslaught.

Through the call, Yon calmly spoke, his tone bored. Really, Mate, you are a hard one to teach. No matter. Discipline always produces results.

Abruptly, the call stopped, and Laylah gave a weak gasp of relief, her eyes watering and her throat hurt from screaming. Deciding that the better part of valor was to get up, she crawled to the edge of the bed. She almost fell before righting herself and standing on shaky legs. She kept her eyes trained on the floor. If she acted obedient enough, Yon would stop hurting her.

    Good, Feral.

She gritted her teeth at his condescending tone. Whatever he had in mind, she wanted it over quickly.

Now, Mate, tell me. Why were you leaving the premises with my Beta and his brother?

Laylah gulped. So, that's what this was about. She knew she wasn't at the Jaksenville mansion. Her nose told her the scent was all wrong. She was in a new place, and that was bad. Very bad.

    I'm waiting, Mate.

She couldn't answer that. Wouldn't answer that. Only suffering at Yon's hand would occur if she spoke. So Laylah chose to remain silent. Her feline and wolf were in agreement. Family and friends were important. You didn't turn on them.

No answer? My, you are bold today. Clyde.

    Yes, my Alpha.

Laylah was a little more prepared this time, but it still hurt as Yon's call dug and stabbed her mind, trying to force the answer from her.

She had to persevere. If she caved now, it would be a disaster. Again, Daemyn joined in and Laylah's legs collapsed. She sank to the floor clutching her head and whimpering. She felt her nose starting to bleed. Unconsciousness called, and she wanted to follow it.

    Oh, no, you don't.

A second later, a slap rocked her head. The shock momentarily lessened the force of the call and she glanced up, panting hard.

Clyde's malicious gaze bored into her. His blows hurt as bad as Yon's did.

Your Alpha didn't say you could sleep, Feral.

Daemyn pulled her to her feet, his hands capturing her arms in a vise that allowed for no movement.

Yon stood before her, his hand reaching out to grab her jaw. He squeezed, and she yelped.

Why were you leaving with Miguel and Roberto? If you tell me, this suffering can end. For you.

Laylah knew what he meant. Yon would stop hurting her, but he would kill Miguel and Roberto. She wasn't going to let anyone die. She had to stand firm. She felt warmth flood through her from her feline and wolf. Yes, she could do this. Had to stand strong.

Still silent. I think miracles can occur, boys. Yon released her jaw and backed up.

She thought maybe he would leave her alone, but that was forgotten with the backhand slap that sent pain ricocheting through her face and neck.

I guess I'll have to loosen your tongue, Mate.

She refused to look at him. She took four more slaps and one punch to her face that blackened her eye. The pain was intense, the swelling immediate, and Laylah almost passed out.

My Alpha, since she wants to be like the traitorous worms, maybe we should treat her the same way, suggested Clyde.

That is a great idea, Clyde. Daemyn, release her.

Laylah felt Daemyn's hands let go, and she staggered forward, off-balance. Yon caught her left arm and dragged her stumbling from the room.

Behind her, she could sense Clyde and Daemyn, shadowing their Alpha like always. Dizziness, followed by nausea, nearly made Laylah vomit.

She had no sense of direction nor knowledge of where they could be. Her feline and wolf were both growling, but she couldn't concentrate enough to hear their instructions.

The smell of dampness and blood suddenly assaulted her nose. Another few seconds and her mind identified the blood as Miguel's and Roberto's. She wanted to cry. Yon had hurt them again. Would this vicious cycle ever end?

Daemyn stepped in front of them and opened the door. Laylah raised her head, fought back the dizziness, and blinked. No, she wasn't seeing things. It really was dark inside the room.

Clyde glided past them and into the room. A few seconds later the lights came on, and Laylah gasped. On the far left she saw Miguel and Roberto chained to the wall.

Yon's words then made sense. Her panicked mind thought of her unborn child. Would silver hurt it? She clamped down on her thoughts. She couldn't let Yon hear them.

    Laylah!

Hearing Miguel's voice eased a little of her fear. She was strong. He believed her to be and that gave her courage.

How sweet. The traitor dares to speak.

    Clyde, no! she yelled.

The Beta ignored her. He charged Miguel and started raining down blows on Miguel's back.

    Stop it! Please! she wailed.

You still care for that cur? Bad Feral!

Yon grabbed her hair and yanked hard, bringing tears to her eyes.

    Ouch! Let go, Yon!

He pulled harder, and Laylah tried to use her free hand to force him to let go. Instead, he increased the pressure of his other hand on her arm until she felt something pop.

The agony was indescribable as she shrieked from the double assault. She came close to fainting, but Yon didn't allow it.

He forced her over to the right side of the wall. He shoved her and she stumbled, her head barely missed being slammed into the wall.

Dizziness swamped her, and she reached out, her fingers hitting the cold wall. She closed her eyes and fought to stay upright. Laylah gasped when Yon came up behind her, his hands on her arms.

She flinched when he leaned in, his hot breath brushing her ear and neck.

Enjoy your stay. You could have been comfortable in the suite if you had only cooperated. Oh, well. Ferals do like it rough.

    I hate you.

    I know, Mate. I know.

Laylah heard the clink of chain and, before she could escape, the silver collar was around her neck sliding into place.

Now, my little Feral Mate, hope you like your new surroundings. Maybe after a few hours, you'll be a little more cooperative.

I have nothing to give you, Yon, she hissed.

Oh, my dear, dear little Feral. How little you know.

He stood back and slapped her on the backside. She winced and spun around so that she could face him. Yon caressed her face, and she jerked away from his fingers.

Yon chuckled and walked away. Clyde. Daemyn. Let's go.

Good night, traitors, Clyde chortled and turned off the light, plunging the room into darkness.

    Chapter 4

    Monday, 9 am

    Invarnash Municipal Building, New Florida

Ahdum Newsome looked at the assembled group and frowned. The air of dejection still clung to everyone. Two long days had passed since Yon's capture of and fleeing with Laylah, Miguel and Roberto.

He was as shocked as everyone else. How had the plan failed? Miguel's worry now made sense. Perhaps the young man's nervousness had been brought on by instinct. An instinct that they all should have heeded.

Ahdum shook his head. It was too late to worry about second-guessing what might have been. They had to focus on the here and now if they wanted to save the captured group.

He cleared his throat, and everyone fell silent. His gaze slowly traveled over each one: Stefan, Kattcha, Donil, Leo, Benji, Jacques and, of course, his daughter Britta. All sat, eyes trained on him.

I'm going to initiate the tel-conference, and then we shall begin.

He tapped in a code, and a 3-D display popped up. On the right were Alpha Solon with his Beta, Maddox, behind him. On the left was Sharon and her Alpha, Desideria Keegan.

Welcome, Council Leaders and Alphas of the Cali and Tex Territories. I'm honored that you have given support in this delicate situation.

It is an unfortunate situation that should not even be occurring if the New Florida Council had its house in order, growled Sharon.

I agree, Constable Sharon. However, placing blame will get us nowhere, stated Maddox.

True, this situation is far from ideal. We have several things we need to figure out. One, how did Yon know of our plans and, two, where did he take Laylah and the boys.

I told you that Miguel was no good. I'm sure he betrayed us to Yon. I will personally rip his throat out when we get to them.

Being hasty as usual, Pup, drawled Stefan.

What did you just say, Old Man?

Settle down, Boy. I don't agree with you at all. That boy risked his life and that of his family to work with us. He didn't strike me as the kind of guy who would turn on Laylah. If anything, the opposite. I think he would die to save her. Whatever caused this plan to fail had nothing to do with the two brothers.

Donil scowled when everyone agreed. Ahdum knew that the young Alpha had some kind of grudge against Miguel. He would have to watch Donil. He couldn't have the Alpha messing up the bargains Ahdum had made.

If it wasn't Miguel, then who was it?

Kattcha, I wish I knew. My people are still digging, Ahdum looked to the Alphas on the screen. I am open to suggestions on how best to proceed. My people can only go so far. I know Weres have their own networks and ways to handle such situations.

Alpha Keegan spoke up next. I have feelers out among our allies in the other territories. We should hear something soon. Until then, I give you the loan of Constable Sharon and her trackers. Use them as you see fit.

I, too, will send help. Maddox will stay here until his wing heals. I have another Beta with several scouts that can come to you by the end of the week, promised Solon.

I may have a way to get some intel as well.

Everyone turned to stare at Stefan.

    Really?

Stefan ignored Donil's sarcastic retort and looked at Ahdum. If you can ignore some of my informants' backgrounds, I can have the info we need sooner rather than later.

Ahdum frowned. He didn't like dealing with criminal elements, but he wasn't about to let Alpha Yon hurt Laylah, Miguel, and Roberto either.

Stefan, I trust your judgment. Do what you must. I don't want to know where it comes from. I want results. I feel we all do. Let's make it happen. When everyone is ready, we shall call another meeting and lay out our plans. Let us pray that Yon will not act hasty.

That is one thing that cunning wolf is not, drawled Leo.

    Donil glanced at Leo. What?

Hasty. He's not hasty. He's methodical. That can work in our favor, added Benji.

Ahdum stroked his chin and pondered all the information. Yes, they would make this succeed.

Does anyone have anything to add?

When no one spoke up, he continued. I call this meeting adjourned. We shall all reconvene in a week.

Solon, Maddox, Sharon, and Desideria all nodded before their screens went blank.

Ahdum surveyed the room's occupants again. Britta stood in the corner looking thoughtful. He would have to get her thoughts later on the meeting.

Stefan stood first. I'm out. I'll keep in touch. Tri-Ruler, I thank you again for everything you're doing for my niece.

It's nothing. Laylah is a sweet girl and deserves happiness. I want to make sure she gets it.

Kattcha, Jacques, I'll call soon. Stefan turned and pinned Donil with a steely gaze. "Don't do anything rash, Alpha. We have to succeed and it requires a hunt filled with patience."

Donil bristled, but wisely said nothing. Stefan merely grunted, shifted to wolf, and left the room.

Everyone else stood, said his or her good-byes and left.

Britta, how are you, mi hija?

I'm fine, Papa. Angry that Yon stays one step ahead of us.

Ahdum walked over to her and hugged her. She was trembling with anger. She was a spitfire, just like her mother.

We will get her back. How about you call Ryan, and let's go get some brunch.

Sounds like a plan to me. Britta hugged him again before pulling away. She got out her e-comm and was placing a call as she left the room.

Ahdum sighed. He had a feeling this was going to be a long week.

    Monday, 11:30 am

Pheasant Grove, Silentshadow Home, New Florida

Donil sat in passenger seat of his mother's truck and brooded. The early morning conference had been something of a bust in his opinion. Nothing was accomplished, and Laylah was still missing.

    A cred for your thoughts.

You don't want to hear my thoughts, Mom. They are nothing but dark.

    Humor me, son.

Donil clamped down on a growl. His mother would smack him if he didn't control himself.

It is all so frustrating. We were right there! And that bastard got on his heli and mocked us! Why do we keep failing? I don't understand it!

    Donil... interrupted Benji.

Leo shook his head. Yo, Donil, you're projecting.

Donil turned his head to glance at Leo and Benji who stood outside the truck's door.

I don't give a damn. This is my land, and I can do what I want! He yanked open the door, forcing the twins to back up. I'm tired of everyone discounting the things I say. I know I'm younger, but that doesn't make all of you wiser.

    Donil, calm down, urged Benji.

No, I will not. Being calm got Laylah caught. Planning landed us in this mess. Maybe a little bit of impulsiveness would be better. Perhaps something could get accomplished.

Son, that won't work, and you know it. Patience is a feline's main virtue. It is not always pleasant, but we need to exercise it, especially with Yon. He has resources on par with Henry that we can't hope to compete with. One more mistake, and we will lose Laylah, permanently, admonished Kattcha.

Donil didn't want to hear it. It was the same drivel that had gotten them nowhere fast. He shoved through his friends and, ignoring his mother, he shifted and raced for the forest. He would run out his emotions and then, maybe he would find the calm that kept eluding him.

    Chapter 5

    Monday, 1 pm

    Meame, New Florida

This had to be one of the worst months of his life, and Stefan didn't see it getting any better. He prided himself on his cunning, but Yon's continuous outmaneuvering of them was galling. Was he losing his touch? No, it wasn't possible. He hadn't lived this long and watched out for his niece by being a failure.

He shifted back to two legs and approached his cabin. After a quick sensory and telepathic check of his surroundings, Stefan entered. He repeated the process with each room in the two-bedroom cabin.

Satisfied that everything was fine, he slid into his chair at his desk and turned on the e-comm. He didn't particularly want to use this contact, but he had a hunch that Yon had gone north to the Yor Territory.

The Council that ran the Yor Territory was full of bullies, thieves, liars, and killers. They love to screw over others, and Yon would fit in nicely there.

After a few more seconds of debating, he punched in a number he hadn't thought he'd need to call ever again.

The call connected, and Brianna McDan's face appeared on the display. She smirked when she saw him.

Well, hello there, Stefan, she purred.

Hello, Bri. Long time no speak.

I know. You are always so unapproachable, Stefan. Even though I promised to make you a happy wolf, you still wouldn't budge.

Stefan kept his cool. Brianna was famous for her goading of her prey into revealing careless information. She was fishing, and he wasn't going to take her bait. No, he was going to use her feline curiosity to his advantage.

You'll have to forgive. I already dated and was burned by one deadly beauty. I didn't really want to experience that again.

Brianna preened at his compliment. He would continue to stroke that ego while getting what he needed out of this venture.

You are a smooth talker, and I love that about you. So, handsome, what can I do for you?

I need to speak to your Alpha. I know he's in the room with you.

Oh? What makes you think that?

Stefan grinned. "Why would I give away what your tells are? He's in the room. I know because after that Branx incident in 2215, I learned to watch the two of you like a hawk. I discovered all kinds of useful things that I will not be sharing with today's class."

Brianna pouted, her red lipstick accentuating her lips. She was a beautiful, voluptuous woman with curves made to tempt a man's sanity. That's why she was such an effective assassin.

He had seen her in action, and he made sure to steer clear of the deadly beauty. He could banter all day with Brianna and her Alpha but he needed to keep the call short.

Fine. But, you better remember, Wolf, that all things with us have a price.

I haven't forgotten that your Alpha drives a hard bargain.

Brianna nodded and stood. She bowed to the tall, dark curly-haired man in a trench coat that stepped into view.

Capo, Stefan McJeysen requests an audience.

Accepted. Brianna, my dear, can you please go sharpen your claws in Room 4. I want the bait to catch my escaping fish.

Brianna grinned, and Stefan warily watched as she licked her fangs.

Gladly, my Capo. She blew Stefan a kiss and sashayed out of view.

    What a woman!

    I agree, Alpha.

What kind of greeting is that, Stefan?

Stefan eyed one of the New Yor City's most infamous Alphas, Vinnie Revat, and debated on whether to continue to tread cautiously or be blunt.

It's the greeting I give all leaders of state. Stefan opted for a bit of both. He was laying down his cards. Time to see if he would win.

Vinnie chuckled. Shrewd, my friend, very shrewd. So, why is the great and mysterious Stefan calling me?.

Now came the tricky part. He really didn't want to call in a favor needlessly, but Laylah's life and that of others was riding on this one.

I'm collecting on the Branx 2215 favor you owe me.

Vinnie's face went expressionless, and Stefan steeled his nerves. He couldn't let Vinnie see him sweat.

I owe you six favors still, don't I? The Branx one is a large one. What's the risk to me?

Stefan let out an inward breath of relief. Vinnie was willing to negotiate. That was a good sign.

I need muscle. We are going after Dayid Yon who I suspect has fled into your territory.

Dayid Yon? That bastard is here? Are you sure? growled Vinnie.

Stefan's eyes widened. Vinnie had a near perfect poker face. For him to show emotion was something to note and file away for later use.

As sure as I can be without visual confirmation. I know that he isn't welcome in the other territories at the moment. We cornered him here, but he slipped away and took something precious to me with him.

Vinnie's gaze sharpened, and Stefan prepared himself. Vinnie was worse that wolf with his tenacity of attack.

Is it the diamond you always talked about when you worked for me?

Yes, as well as a set of figures that were guarding it.

Vinnie rubbed his cheek and then drummed his fingers on the table.

I'm willing to talk shop, but if I assist., I want a few things.

    Name them. I'm listening.

"I want your word that once your little rebellion in the south succeeds, you open
