Living the Coconut Life - Meryl S. Brown

    Dedication

Without the Lord Jesus Christ, this book would not exist. He introduced me to Melanie and her family. For years, I wrote brief stories that included Melanie, while leaving blanks for her to insert the appropriate vocabulary word from the word bank. She scored high on her vocabulary quizzes, but she insisted that I remove her from the episodes.

Write about something else! Her response to my what involved fruit, and Coco Coconut came to life.

    CHAPTER 1

    Let’s Meet the Characters

Coco Coconut and her sister Candace live with their family near the ocean in Southern California. Coco is in sixth grade, and Candace is in tenth grade. A large aerospace corporation employs their parents.

The Coconuts live in a community with homes near the ocean, homes with a distant view of the beach, and homes that are not close to the ocean but enjoy a lovely sea breeze.

Clarissa, Mr. Coconut’s sister, serves as the great advisor for the entire Coconut family. Auntie earned her degree from Fruitland University, and she has her own clothing business. She is very close with Candace and seems more like an older sister than an aunt.

The Coconuts’ home is about three miles from the beach on Avenue H. Aunt Clarissa lives on Pineapple Lane, which is one block from the Pacific Ocean. She lives next door to the Pineapple family whose youngest son, Peter, is one of Coco’s closest friends.

Coco, Peter, Paula Plum, Susie Strawberry, Amanda Apricot, Annie Apple, and Bennie Blueberry are all sixth graders at Fruitland Middle School. Although Candace is much older
