Revelations - C.J. Daniels
Chapter 1
Philip Mason fiddled nervously with his drink as he grimly faced the end of his days. The alcohol did very little to calm nerves that had been at the breaking point since the release announcing his new novel, Revelations, had hit the press. Everyone thought it was fiction, like the rest of his stories, but how could he tell them that his story about gods and demons from outer space was very real, and that they planned to eliminate the human race and take this world. Their final solution
was also the final chapter of the book.
Hours ago, it was the noble thing to do; now he wasn’t so sure. It had been more than twelve hours since the announcement had supposedly gone out. Now it was almost 1am and here he was, hiding out in his publisher’s office, alone, as if that would protect him. The truth was he had nowhere else to go; worse yet, he was out of scotch. Going home was never an option – they knew where he lived; they were gods after all, weren’t they?
His publisher thought he was crazy when he asked to stay over in his office, but he’d made the man and his company a ton of money over the last ten years with bestseller after bestseller. Marcus Lane had no problem with him occupying his office if he wanted to hide out from the curious news media, even if it meant hiding out until the start of the press conference tomorrow.
Surprisingly, not one media outlet had tried to contact him about his move to sci-fi. You would have thought that the country’s number one mystery writer coming out with a book titled Revelations
would have stirred up at least a mild curiosity, especially from his friends at the New York Times Book Review supplement. It scared the shit out of him to think that perhaps all was not as it seemed, or maybe it was the scary paranoia in him rising to the surface. I either case, he made sure that a digital backup of his manuscript existed, and was hidden away – just in case. One way or another, this information would get out, even if he had to post it as a free download.
Whatever courage he’d possessed prior to today had been replaced with the unsettling knowledge that he’d made the shit list of those in his book. He knew they’d try to stop the information from getting out to the public – it was too damaging to their plans to allow it to exist for even one believer. Marcus had laughed off this cowardly hiding to the eccentricity of his famous author, though Mason realized that Stephen King would probably have left a long time ago, his middle finger up at the gods like one of the characters in his horror stories.
Mason almost dropped his drink as thunder shook the office, spilling a drop or two on the carpet before making the save of the night. It seemed appropriate that a storm was brewing; he hoped that the little alcohol spilled on the rug would go unnoticed. Hopefully, Marcus wouldn’t hate him for the stain on the light brown rug – not that it was going to matter in the next twenty-four or so hours.
He turned to stare out the large windows behind his chair at the darkness of the city beyond. At this time of night, tourists were either back in their hotel rooms or drugging it up in one of the all night brothels that some people called a night scene. At sixty-two floors above the streets of midtown Manhattan, he had a secure view of Central Park and the many vagrants and criminals that inhabited it. Pretty soon many would consider him among the crazies.
Great,
he finally said before downing the remainder his drink, where the fuck is she?
Dead, he thought, as he would probably be soon.
It began innocently enough on a New York City subway train during his trip uptown to chat with his agent regarding misplaced
royalties. Mason usually picked off-hours to travel the subway. He detested afternoon traffic in Manhattan which made him sit inside a dirty taxi cab longer than he felt comfortable with. The subway was worse, but at least he didn’t have eyes staring at him through a mirror while a meter ticked away. Today, at least, the car was air conditioned and somewhat empty.
Mason found a seat in the corner and pulled out the copy of the New York Times book review he’d bought at the newsstand in the station and found himself in his customary top 5 spot on the bestseller list. The latest Derek Bard mystery had debuted at number one, more than twenty-two weeks ago and was still going strong. He’d find out from his agent where his checks were or he’d threaten to find another agent.
The train squealed on century’s old track as it made its way through the dark tunnel toward the next station. There were other people in the
