About Arlo Tratlonovich
Cornelia
Rome, Italy, in the last month of the year 695 the city of Rome, the year of the consulate of Marcus Calpurnius Bibulus and Gaius Julius Caesar.
(Report Hathor)
I had really tried hard.
Knowing that today the most important feast of Rome would be celebrated - the Saturnalia - and familiarized by my friend Cornelia with the strange customs that the Romans had adapted in the course of time, I had thought it necessary to adapt to the expected conditions. The light hooded coat that I had used in recent weeks in such cases would not do it today. There was a simple reason for this: Hoods and similar headgear were banned that day.
That was part of the strange customs mentioned.
The Romans had abused this festival, which was originally intended to celebrate the turn of the year, for strange ideological purposes. At the same time they celebrated the equality of all men
during the Saturnalia. Everyone was equal on this and on the following day - whether rich or poor, young or old, whether slave or patrician. A rather unusual concept - if only because of course it was different the other days of the year.
The renunciation of any headgear was one of them.
The underlying idea was, of course, even more absurd - towards the end of the year. By the end of the year it was usually rather cool. It was exactly the time when a headgear would have done a great job, especially as it could snow occasionally these days. But more important was the ideology.
So I had to do something. And of course my friend Cornelia Fausta had helped me.
The easiest thing had been to adjust the dressing. Cornelia just had some of Lucullus' slaves - we lived there; I will explain why - sent to the market and commissioned to bring a selection of her favorite traders into the house. Of course, the traders knew they did not have to worry about payments. Consequently, two hours later, we were equipped with everything we could wish for in terms of dressing during the Saturnalia. The money collector of the traders (completely trusting the two had not been then) disappeared delighted. And we could focus on the real problem. Our hairstyle.
I mentioned earlier that during the Saturnalia headgear would be banned for the sake of egalitarianism. So we needed specialists who would fit us with suitable hairstyles. We only had to find out what we meant by 'suitable'.
Again, Cornelia knew advice. Of course we would not use the help of a public barber. She
