DISCLAIMER
Andre Richard and the Music Ear Training Method do not guarantee that you will be able to play music by ear after reading this manual. This book clearly explains how you may be able to improve your skill level and play by ear if you utilize the steps accurately, although many of Andre Richard’s students have successfully improved their ear training skills by implementing this method. As stated in the manual, the ability to play music by ear also depends on many factors including a person’s musical aptitude, current skill level on a musical instrument, sense of pitch and timing, ability to learn new topics, and amount of quality practice time.
WHY I WROTE THIS BOOK AND WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT IF YOU WANT TO PLAY MUSIC BY EAR
"If music be the food of love, ROCK ON!!!
As you may have noticed from this distorted Shakespearean quote, I love to improvise! I especially like to do it with great music while playing guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, or saxophone when I’m performing my favorite songs by ear. Music has given me a gigantic amount of pleasure because I’m able to play whatever & however I want to perform while alone, with friends, or other musicians.
This would not have been possible without teaching myself to play music by ear. Although I was fortunate to have piano lessons until I was 16 years of age, I was taught almost nothing regarding music ear training. It came naturally to me and I continue to improve with practice because I understand all that is required to do it successfully.
My parents were able to teach me to sing songs before they were able to get me to speak words. As a child I was told by many friends, relatives, and music professionals that I had an unusually high and innate musical ability. Since being a teenager, I have been able to identify pitches blasted out of car horns, kettles, and clinked glasses. I have won bets that I could replay a series of random notes performed on a piano in one attempt after hearing them just once. For several years, I have been able to know how to play songs after only listening to them before practising and improvising them on an instrument.
If you have encountered difficulty playing by ear than it is through no fault of your own! Most of us have been taught what we have learned, but not taught how to teach ourselves and you were probably never in the position to have proper music ear training. You are far from being the only person who has difficulty playing music by ear. Many musicians who perform with great skill by reading music could not play by ear if it meant saving their lives because they have not taken the time to learn or it does not come naturally to them.
Since being a seventeen, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to have taught thousands of students privately and in many schools of downtown Toronto, Canada. I have seen very few who have the ability to play by ear with a great deal of talent or confidence. The steps in this book were taught to some of them. Those who took them seriously either improved or greatly improved. This book will also improve your skills if you approach it with determination, time, and patience. The skill level that you develop will also depend on your musical aptitude, the speed at which you learn,
