    Alliances - Pamela Daniell

    Prologue

"Push Brenda, she’s almost here," Dr. Carver instructed while the monitor spiked as another excruciating contraction engulfed Brenda.

Exhausted from the long labor, Brenda struggled to sit up. I can’t! she cried out as the contraction peaked, It hurts too much. Please, can’t I have something for the pain?

I’m sorry, but it’s too late for that, besides it’s almost over. I just need you to push a few more times. Dr. Carver stood up and squeezed Brenda’s hand for reassurance, and then sat back down and readied for the delivery.

I’m so tired, can’t I rest for a few minutes? Brenda asked as she lay back down on the pillow and closed her eyes.

Nurse Melody wiped the sweat off of Brenda’s forehead. You do want the baby to survive, don’t you?

Of course I do, Brenda replied through gritted teeth as another contraction began to build.

Well then, I need you to push. The baby is already in the birth canal and if you don’t push, she’ll get stuck and won’t be able to breathe. You have to push her out!

Brenda nodded as she struggled to sit back up as the contraction reached its peak and she gripped the nurse’s hand. She took a deep breath and pushed with all her strength.

Perfect, Dr. Carver said. One more push like that and the baby will be here. I can already see she has brown hair.

Does she really? Brenda asked her face beaming with pride.

She sure does. You’re doing a great thing by carrying this baby to term. She’s going to change the world someday.

Brenda gripped the railings on the bed as another contraction hit her. She pulled her legs up and pushed with every ounce of strength she had left.

She’s here! Dr. Carver announced as he cut the baby’s umbilical cord.

Is she okay? Brenda asked as the baby’s cry fill the air.

Yes, Dr. Carver said as he held the baby up so Brenda could see her.

Brenda smiled as a tear rolled down her cheek; she thought about how she had been able to do what others before her could not. She had carried the first hybrid baby to term and successfully given birth.

It had been a long, hard pregnancy, as she had not been the baby’s biological mother and her body was not prepared to carry such a special child. But she had held out and done what was necessary to ensure the child be born.

She’s perfect, she said as the last of her energy faded and she collapsed back onto her pillow. Kiss her for me, she whispered and then closed her eyes for the last time.

Should we try to revive her? Nurse Melody asked, quickly lowering the bed as the flatline appeared in the monitor.

Dr. Carver shook his head. No, let her go. She’s done what we needed her to do. She knew there was a chance she wouldn’t make it through the delivery and was prepared to die so the child could be born. She believed in what we were doing.

But what about the baby? She needs a mother.

Dr. Carver shook his head. Don’t worry about the baby, she’ll have enough people to look after her.

Nurse Melody pulled the sheet up over Brenda’s face. Rest in peace, she whispered and then walked over to see the baby that Brenda had given her life to ensure was born healthy.

Why do you think this one survived when all the others didn’t? She asked as the doctor checked the baby’s vital signs.

Because this one was created with not only angelic and demonic essences, but we used the egg and sperm from an actual Nephilim and demon. We didn’t just inject it with essences like the others. I believe that extra step is what caused this birth to be successful.

Too bad the mother didn’t survive.

Dr. Carver looked over at Brenda’s covered body. To be honest, I had my doubts she would. I knew the baby would need some kind of essence to grow properly in the womb, which was why we injected her with it once a day. And with Brenda not being a Nephilim or demon, her body began shutting down, as the essences were a foreign substance injected into her. I think the only reason she survived this long was because the baby absorbed most of the essence and gave her strength.

Dr. Carver placed a tiny pink hat on the baby’s head and swaddled her in a blanket. I’ll have you feed her a bottle in the nursery. I have an important call to make to notify someone of this little one’s birth. He picked the baby up and handed her to Melody.

What about a name? We have to call this sweet little thing something.

Her creator has given her the name Nevaeh.

That’s such a unique name. Where did he get it from?

It's Heaven spelled backward, but when her creator is not around, we’ll call her Ava.

Dr. Carver watched as Nurse Melody left the room and headed down the hall with the baby before he turned and started towards his office to inform Daniel that his creation had been born alive and healthy.

"How is she?" Daniel asked as he arrived at the Densen Institute to see his creation.

She’s good, she was born this morning with no complications at the time of her birth. The mother, on the other hand, didn’t make it. She passed away moments after Nevaeh’s birth.

Daniel waved his hand in dismissal. She did her duty and carried the child to term, that is all she was needed for.

Dr. Carver couldn’t understand how an angel could be so insensitive about human life. But then again, from the beginning he never cared about any of the women who had attempted to carry the fetuses to term. He only cared for the fetus, and had only shown any kind of emotion when the fetuses had died in the womb, and that was anger.

They had lost three fetuses before they realized what they were doing wrong and had corrected it. It had taken them years to find the perfect donors.

All that matters now is the child grows healthy. There is no doubt she will be extremely powerful, just as I’ve predicted.

Would you like to see her? Dr. Carver asked as they stopped in front of the nursery door.

    Daniel nodded. I would.

Dr. Carver opened the door to see Nurse Melody holding Nevaeh and rocking her. She immediately stood as the men entered the room.

    How is she? Daniel asked.

Perfect, Melody said, walking over to Daniel. Would you like to hold her?

Daniel shook his head. No, that’s not necessary, all that matters now is that she’s healthy. Notify me of her development, especially when she starts to show signs of her abilities. We need to start her training as soon as she does.

Can’t that wait until she’s older, like the others in Heaven?

Daniel raised his hand. No, she needs to be trained as soon as she shows signs she has abilities. She was born to be a soldier. That is the sole reason she was created. The sooner you accept that, the easier it will be on you when she’s older and leaves here.

Melody took a step back as the baby began to whimper. Sorry, I’m sure it’s just that she needs to be changed.

Do what you must, I’m done here anyway. Daniel turned towards Dr. Carver. I’ll be stopping in more frequently to get updates on the child. But you are to notify me the moment she shows any signs of abilities.

Sir, are you sure she will develop them at a young age? Her parents were teens when they developed theirs.

If my calculations are correct, yes, she will develop her abilities years before her parents did.

Speaking of her parents, what has become of them? Dr. Carver asked.

That is not your concern. I have dealt with both of them. Daniel turned to the leave the room, and then stopped and turned around. It would be wise of both you to not get attached to the child. She was born to be a soldier and will be raised like one. Without another word, Daniel turned back around and left the room.

    Chapter One

"I can’t believe he left me." The last of her strength gone, Jenna covered her face and sank to the floor as she and Dango arrived back in the home she grew up in.

Tears spilled, blinding her eyes and choking her voice. I trusted him, loved him, and he left me, she sobbed as she pulled her knees up to her chest and rested her head on them.

Dango knelt down beside Jenna. I’m sorry, child, he said as he placed his hand on her shoulder. You should know by now that the only one you can truly trust is yourself. You’d be wise to remember that. Almost everyone you have ever loved has betrayed you. Your mom, by keeping your heritage from you until it was too late, Alex, by gaining your trust and then turning on you, and Dylan, who claimed to love you, and then chose the angels over you.

Anger engulfed Jenna and the tears stopped as quickly as they had begun. So, what do you expect me to trust you now? She flared at Dango as she jumped up.

Dango shook his head as he backed away from Jenna. No child, I don’t. I’m here to help you free yourself from the angels’ grip. Whether you choose to believe that is up to you. But remember, I never deceived you. You knew what I wanted from the start. I never lied about that. I’m just here now to help you with your pain. Are you ready to forget about those that have betrayed you?

Jenna looked around the living room as memories from her past came flooding back. She couldn’t believe how many memories had begun to fade since she had left this life behind to go on the run from the angels and demons that wanted her dead two years ago.

She smiled as her gaze stopped on the entranceway to the kitchen as she saw the markings etched into the trim. Each year on her birthday her mom would measure her in that very spot.

When she turned thirteen, she tried to persuade her mom to stop, but she insisted they keep up the tradition.

Aww come on, Mom, do we really need to do this every year? Jenna asked her mother as she stood by the doorway with a pen in her hand ready to measure her.

Erin nodded. Yes, we do. It’s a tradition and will only take a second.

Jenna reluctantly got up from the couch and walked over to her mother. And what happens if we ever move? What are you going to do then, rip the trim down and take it with us?

Jenna shook her head as a smile appeared on her mother’s face, she knew that’s exactly what her mom would do to keep her memories with her.

I intend to do just that, Erin replied as she smiled. Now, make sure you stand up straight.

Of course, every year was there, every year, except for her seventeenth. That’s the year her life changed drastically. If she had only known that was the last year her mother would ever measure her she wouldn’t have argued with her over something that clearly made her mom happy.

Jenna walked over and picked up a picture of her and her mom that had been taken when she was two. They were in this very room celebrating her second birthday. They looked so happy in the picture sitting in front of her birthday cake as Jenna was about to blow the candles out. This was her mom’s favorite picture of the two of them when Jenna was little, and she proudly displayed it where everyone could see it.

How can I be sure they won’t come for me when I can’t remember? she asked as she set the picture back down and turned to face Dango.

Dango shook his head. As long as you have no memory they have no reason to come for you. The only reason they tried to kill you was because you were a threat to them. You won’t be any more if you can’t remember who you truly are.

Jenna couldn’t help but wonder what was in this for Dango. He was a demon after all, and she was certain he wanted something for helping her.

I don’t get it, why are you helping me? she asked, determined to find out the truth.

Believe it or not, Jenna, we are on the same side. I want to see the gates of Heaven closed as much as you want revenge on them for all they have done to you.

But I helped the angels take Alex. Why would you help me after I did that to your son?

Dango nodded. Yes, Jenna, you did, but we didn’t give you much of a choice, did we? So I’m choosing to forgive you and help you destroy the people we both despise.

Jenna took a step backward and shook her head. I’m sorry, but no. I don’t want anything to do with them anymore and that includes fighting them. I have the chance to be happy again. Now are you going to allow that, or are you going to take my soul?

Dango shook his head as he took a step closer to her. Jenna, I was never going to take your soul. All I want is your essence. That way if Daniel ever goes back on the deal and takes your life, I can revive you with your essence. If you decide you want it back before then, I’ll gladly return it.

Jenna couldn’t believe she was actually considering trusting Dango. What’s in it for you? she asked?

Jenna, whether you want to believe it, some day you will want to hold the angels accountable for all they’ve done to you, and by me holding your essence it will enable you to do so. We’ll both win.

Suddenly remembering that her mom was supposed to be returned to her and that she wasn’t there, Jenna ran throughout the house searching for her. Seeing her nowhere, she rushed back into the living room.

Where’s my mom? She was supposed to be returned to me. Jenna crossed her hands across her chest. I’m not agreeing to anything until she’s here.

"Don’t worry, Jenna, she shall be, as soon as we are done. This is a decision you need to make on your own without any interference from anyone else. Then no matter what you decide, I’ll make sure the agreement you made with Daniel goes through as you want it to."

Frustrated and just wanting to forget about the past two years and all she had endured, Jenna took a deep breath and released it. She didn’t care anymore and just wanted this to end.

Do what you want, just let me get on with my life, she told Dango.

    As you wish.

Dango stepped forward and placed his hand on Jenna’s chest. She watched as his hand started to glow and then the room started to spin. The next thing she knew, she was in her mother’s arms.

    Chapter 2

    ONE YEAR LATER

"Tell me what I want to know!" Daniel yelled as the vein in his neck bulged.

I told you I don’t know! I’ve never been there before, Alex insisted as he struggled against the straps that bound him to the chair. Daniel had been asking him this same question every day for weeks now, and every time he told him he didn’t know, the punishment got worse.

Liar! Daniel swung his hand hard and slammed it into Alex’s face, slicing his cheek with the ring he wore on his left hand. "I know you know, he must have told you. Now tell me!"

Alex’s head jerked to the side as blood sprayed out of his mouth. He sat silent, not caring how much Daniel hurt him anymore. He was done. He knew no matter what he said or did, Daniel would want more information, information he didn’t have.

Alex knew he deserved every bit of torture Daniel inflicted on him. It was his punishment for what he had done to Erin and Jenna, the only two people that had shown him any kindness, other than his mother. He should have fought harder against Dango’s control the night he had invaded his body. He should have fought harder to save her, but in the end, Dango was stronger and had won.

Well, if you’re not going to tell me what I want, I have no other choice but to take the information from you! If you survive, you survive. If you don’t, you don’t. But since you’ve already outlived your usefulness, it really doesn’t matter.

Daniel stepped closer to Alex and placed both his hands on either side of Alex’s head and then closed his eyes. Alex gripped the chair and screamed as he felt a shock to his brain as Daniel tried to force his way into his mind. He tried to block him, to force him out, but Daniel was too strong and started ripping apart the barriers in his mind.

If you stop fighting me, it’ll hurt less, Daniel said. The more you fight it, the more painful it is.

"Getout…," Alex exclaimed through clenched teeth as his nose began to bleed. His head felt like it would explode as Daniel invaded the inner depths of his brain in search for what he was sure was there. Barrier after barrier, Daniel tore through his mind, weakening him.

Suddenly, Alex’s body went limp as Daniel tore down the final barrier and forced his way into Alex’s mind.

In an instant, Alex saw Daniel standing in front of a young man who couldn’t have been more than seventeen. Knowing this man must be a Nephilim and what Daniel would do to him, Alex once again tried to pull away.

It’s your decision, Daniel told the young man. You can come with me, or you can die.

The boy shook his head. But I don’t want to be part of an army, he replied, his hands shaking at his side.

Well, if that’s your choice. Daniel took a step closer to the young man. I’ll be kind enough to give you a head start before I hunt and kill you.

The boy hesitated and then turned to run, getting only a few steps before Daniel raised his hand and gripped him tight with his energy. An evil grin spread across Daniel’s face as the boy rose into the air.

You should have chosen to come with me, Daniel said as he closed his fist. The boy’s hands suddenly went to his throat and his feet kicked as he struggled to breathe.

Alex cringed as the boy’s face turned blue and his feet slowed, and then stopped, his hands falling from his throat to his sides as he took his last breath. Daniel held him in the air for a few more seconds until he was sure he was dead, and then he merely pulled back his energy and let the boy fall to the ground.

At first, Alex was confused as to what he was seeing. Then a moment later he realized what was happening. Daniel had forgotten to close off his own mind when he had created the link between them.

Alex knew he only had a matter of time before Daniel found what he wanted. He had to take advantage of the few moments he had in Daniel’s mind to search for any information that could help him escape.

His stomach turned as he saw Daniel kill Nephilim after Nephilim when they refused to join his army
