About this ebook

A fractured retelling of the classic fairy tale about a wolf’s hunger and the temptation of seven little kid goats – or in this case ‘goatlings,’ left at home all alone. Mama Goat has to work to fend for herself and her goatlings. Mr. Wolf, a quick learner, turns to the local community to find assistance in tricking the goatlings so they will open the door. The question is, will he succeed? And if he does, what are there consequences?

Told by seven authors, this story is, nonetheless, a whole. Bound into one with laughter and tears. It is a cautionary tale of the tension between survival and the manipulation of a determined predator.

Contributing Authors: Suzanne Newnham, Arlene Liang, Louise Falcioni, Stafford Ray, Anke Ziergiebel and Cat Sheely.

    INTRODUCTION

The Secret Society of Words, known to the real world as the evening group of the Eurobodalla Fellowship of Australian Writers, decided to get into the spirit of National Novel Writers Month 2014 and write a novella to celebrated our first year as a group. The story idea came from one of our newer members and was readily agreed to, as it was a story we all knew. We divided up the chapters by show of hands and within the month we wrote a chapter each.

As first time Editor I found my delightful colleagues made it comparatively easy to weave the story into one colourful fabric. Some chapters stick to the original fable and some, as dictated by the individual writers’ purpose, are anthropomorphised accounts set in the real world.

Therefore, this little novella is for our families and friends to showcase our development as writers, our own styles, the wonderful friendships we have made and learning we have achieved over the past year.

Enjoy. And if you wish to provide commend or feedback, please email me at shecat@me.com.

    by Cassandra Webb

Once upon a time, when mothers could leave their children home alone without the police getting involved, Mama Goat adjusted her bonnet. Underfoot was not one, but three of her goatlings. She would soon discover three more making a right mess out of her living room and the last of her kids was locked in its room daydreaming about the latest boy band known as Chinny-Chin-Chin. Oh, they were cute; teens just old enough to have facial hair; her walls were covered in their posters. Unlike the rest of the house where the walls covered in tiny goatling hoof prints.

No! Mama Goat snapped, then took a deep breath before continuing, no, you cannot come with me. I have three errands to run and I want to be quick. But behave and I'll return with something sweet for after dinner.

Mama Goat stepped with skill around her ankle biters and descended the stairs with them closely behind, still moaning and groaning.

When she had all of her goatlings around her she paused. You know the rules. No fighting, no arguing, no picking on your sister. No leaving the house or letting anyone in. And don't any of you set one little hoof in my kitchen.
