About Hollywood
Hollywood is a twenty-five year old palomino grade horse (grade means mixed breed). He’s ridden English and Western and mostly does trails because he’s getting older. He got his name because he’s as handsome as a Hollywood star, and he used to be a favored school horse because of his lovely, cheerful disposition. Hollywood loves everyone!
1 - No Barn, No Way
Come on, boy,
Ben said encouragingly. He pulled on the leadrope, but the large black horse attached to the other end dug in his hooves and refused to move.
It’s going to rain,
the boy explained. The horse cocked an ear toward Ben, but the look in his intelligent brown eyes made it clear that he had no intention of setting hoof in the barn. Ben sighed and trudged toward the indoor arena.
The horse ambled along peacefully next to him, nudging Ben’s arm with his nose as if to say ‘sorry’.
His good friend Sidney skipped up to them. Getting ready for our lesson?
she asked. Her wavy light brown hair was trapped in a ponytail, and her T-shirt was a very quiet (for Sidney) pink.
Yeah, but Panther still won’t go in the barn so I’m tacking up in the arena,
Ben explained.
He’d been riding the gorgeous Canadian horse for a couple of months and usually got him ready in the paddock where Panther lived, but the coming rain had prompted him to seek shelter this time.
Oh no!
Sidney exclaimed when they got to the indoor arena. Some boarders are riding.
Boarders rented stalls for their horses at Dragonstone Stables, and they had full use of the arena when there were no lessons – Ben wasn’t supposed to disturb them.
A light drizzle had started, making Panther’s long, heavy mane frizz. Ben shook his own straight brown hair out of his eyes and stared at the horse in frustration.
Why do you have to be so difficult? Do you want us to look like drowned rats?
he demanded.
Sidney giggled. Come on, help me with Scout and I’ll help you with Panther after.
They went back to Panther’s paddock and turned him loose again. He trotted over to his hay and started munching, not seeming to notice that the drizzle had turned to rain. The kids ran into the barn, laughing and shaking water out of their hair.
Ben got Scout, a cute pinto horse, out of his stall and started grooming him while Sidney got his tack – the saddle and bridle. Their best friend VeeVee was already hard at work brushing a horse that was cross-tied in the aisle.
How’s Izzy today?
Ben asked, referring to the roan horse.
Shiny,
VeeVee said. Her fluffy blond hair looked almost electric in the dampness. Ben grinned. Answers from VeeVee were never quite what you expected.
After getting Scout ready they went to retrieve Panther. Sidney brought him to the indoor arena and Ben followed, staggering slightly under the weight of the tack he was carrying.
Sorry, there’s a lesson starting soon,
Ben explained to the boarders.
They stood in the middle of the arena and Ben scraped as much water as he could off the horse before saddling up. Then Sidney dashed off to collect Scout while Ben walked Panther around, doing his best to stay out of the boarders’ way.
A few minutes later Julie strode in. She owned Dragonstone Stables and was Ben’s trainer. She was a kind woman with curly dark hair, but her normal easy smile was missing that day.
Ben, you know you’re supposed to wait for me before going into the arena,
she said.
But I didn’t get on,
Ben pointed out.
