From the Author
At five years old, I had my first supernatural experience. I remember running to my mother with screams and tears about the dark shadow that walked through the bathroom door of the old ranch hand’s house. No stranger to the spirit world, my mother explained these occurrences to me as second sight
or sensitivity
to the world around me and beyond as well. She also revealed to me of her first time
, and that it too sent her to seek safety from her mother. My mother told me so much that I couldn’t sleep during the night for a long time, and almost every creak of the floorboards encased me in a shiver of fear.
A few months later, we moved to the small countryside area where my mother grew up, and I noticed a shift in the air and in my mother. When I asked her about it, I remember her slight smile as she gazed across the fields from my grandmother’s house. She explained, Central Texas is a very spiritual place and this area is very connected to our family legacy. Most of our family is buried here in the family graveyard. They watch over us from the other side and know us by our blood. You see, Pumpkin, a spirit can’t harm us, but they can make us very uncomfortable especially if we are not tied to them.
I didn’t understand what that meant until years later. Afterwards the spiritual occurrences happened more often, and I knew then that my mom didn’t tell me all things otherworldly at five years old to scare me. She told me so that I could be prepared for when they happened and to know the difference between a spirit and something else…
This collection of stories comes directly from my mother and my own experiences. When I was twelve, my mother wouldn’t allow me to attend Halloween festivities or go Trick or Treat
anymore. She never told me why, and believe me, I asked. A lot. Because I was so bothersome, she created a new tradition to allow me to enjoy Halloween with my special friends…
Some of the stories I have kept to myself to seem less crazy
. There are also a few that are completely the creation of my imagination. However, I will let you tell the difference in those and my mother, Alice’s, Tales of the Other Side. Enjoy!
Chapter 1
Alexandra von Gibson’s
Exclusive Halloween Social Invitation
C’mon, Ally, Barbara is already waiting at Alexandra’s house.
Ally took a deep breath and pedaled her old Schwinn bicycle harder to catch up to her friend, Jenna.
I’m coming, Jenna. This hill to get to Alex’s house is so steep,
Ally huffed.
Jenna rolled her eyes at her friend and turned around to look ahead at Alexandra’s house in the distance framed by the setting sun. The house was a huge Victorian mansion with actual gargoyle statues mounted on the four corners of the sloped roof. Vines spread across the rest of the rooftop so that it looked like an overgrown garden. In the waning light of the sun, the overflow of vines looked like a dark, moving creature.
Jenna giggled to herself at her imagination. Tonight, is going to be so amazing. Everyone always wanted an invitation to Alexandra von Gibson’s exclusive Halloween social, and she, Jenna Tarver, had received one. Yes, it was going to be an amazing night! She shrugged off the weird feeling of seeing that woman all in black watching her before she left her house. Nothing was going to ruin this. If only they could hurry and get there, Jenna said to herself as she looked back at Ally huff and puff on her outdated bicycle. Turning to see their usual companion, Barbara, wave her hand at them from the front gate, Jenna held on to the angry words that she wanted to yell at Ally for being a slow-poke because they were almost there.
Jenna! Ally! You guys are almost late!
Barbara was a no-nonsense kind of girl, and she did not like to be kept waiting. Jenna shrugged her shoulders and secured her bike to the wrought iron fence.
Sorry, Barb, you know that I had to wait on Ally. Now, have you seen Alex?
No, I waited for y’all. The invitation said that we had to come together or not at all.
Ally pulled to a shaky stop beside the girls and blew out a heavy breath.
That was some ride up that hill! Hey, Barb! You look amazing!
Jenna swung around to stare at Barbara’s outfit. Alex’s invitation said to dress in all black, and Barbara complied to the max with tight black jeans, black T-shirt, and understated
