Tony Taylor and Grandma's Christmas Wish - B.C. Mullins

    A Sick Grandmother

Tony Taylor sat in the living room of his grandparents’ house watching TV. Well, he was almost watching TV – his eyes were looking at the TV, but he wasn’t really seeing what was on the TV. His mind was on what was going on upstairs. Usually Tony loved to visit his grandparents, Bob and Carol Taylor, on their farm. He and his mom, Leah Taylor, lived in a small apartment in New York City, so visiting the farm on Maryland’s eastern shore meant not only seeing his grandparents, but staying in a big farmhouse and being around animals and having lots of room to run and play inside and outside. But this time he wasn’t there just to have fun. This time he and his mom had come to help. Tony’s grandma was sick. She had just come home from the hospital and was now in her bed upstairs. Grandpa needed help to take care of her, the farm, and all the animals that lived on the farm, so Leah and Tony had made the trip to Maryland to see what they could do.

The doctor was examining Tony’s grandmother right at that moment and Tony had to wait downstairs. It didn’t seem fair to Tony because his grandpa and his mom were upstairs with the doctor, but adults always sent kids out of the room whenever anything important was going on. So Tony sat and waited and worried. It was only a little more than two weeks until Christmas and he hoped that his grandma would be better by then.

Skippy, his grandparents’ German shepherd, walked over and put his head on Tony’s lap. Tony petted the dog saying, I know Skippy, I’m sad too.

Tony’s mom and grandfather and the doctor finally came down the stairs whispering to each other. Tony jumped off the sofa and turned to meet them.

Is Grandma going to get better soon? he asked.

Your grandmother is very sick, the stern looking doctor said. He was old and bald and wore huge, thick glasses, and he was not friendly at all like Doctor Maggie, Grandma and Grandpa’s neighbor. Tony liked Dr. Maggie and wondered why she wasn’t taking care of Grandma. She was pretty and friendly and Tony thought she was a great doctor as well as a nice person.

Are you listening, young man? The doctor asked.

    Yes sir.

Okay. Then you know your grandmother needs rest and quiet and you will have to be a very good boy and help out until she gets better.

Yes sir. But what’s wrong with her and how soon is she going to be better?

The doctor sighed. She has pneumonia, and she should still be in the hospital but she insisted on leaving and checking herself out. So I’ve given her medicine and arranged for oxygen to be delivered here at home for her. I was her doctor at the hospital, but after today her regular doctor should be looking in on her. Turning to the adults he continued, I’ve done all I can do for now. If you can, you should convince her to go back to the hospital. If she takes a turn for the worse, you need to make her go back.

We understand, said Tony’s grandfather quietly.

Tony sat back down on the sofa while his grandpa and his mom walked the doctor to the door and said goodbye. When they returned he asked, Can I go up and see Grandma now?

Not right now, Tony’s Mom replied quietly.
