About this ebook

Jordan visits Damian after returning from the South Pacific, where he has been with her. Damian has split from his husband, Keith, and needs comfort and solace from his friend.

Jordan wants consoling, as well. As usual, she has left him feeling lonely and confused, and he's just not sure how much more he can take. Although he has fallen in love with this woman, the mystery surrounding her identity has finally lost its allure.

Jordan cares very deeply for Damian as a friend. Trouble is that Damian, given the chance, would do anything to rekindle the physical intimacy of their youth. Jordan must be careful not to give his friend hope.

But she and Damian are also good friends, and when Damian finally reveals her secret, Jordan is outraged and humiliated.

And in that state of emotional turmoil, he makes a decision that could be painfully irrevocable.

    SHE

    Consumes Me

Damian waved when I emerged from the jetway and passed through the gate. Passengers swirled around us and the PA boomed metallically overhead. He was once again clean-shaven, and I nodded inwardly in approval. Keith had insisted my friend grow a beard, and losing it was a positive first step toward his emancipation.

Jordy-boy, he said, and gave me a quick hug. Thanks for coming.

    Happy to be here, bro.

I smiled faintly and gave him the once-over. His blue eyes were still a little sad, and I touched his shoulder.

    "How are you doing?"

Damian shrugged, as if being dumped by a marriage partner was no big deal. He had greeted me the same way when I'd flown down for the wedding. That was barely a year ago, and it seemed we'd come full circle.

One day at a time, Jordy. He glanced at the carry-on I had slung over my shoulder. Let's get the rest of your stuff.

We walked through the corridor, and took an escalator down to the baggage area.

The tan looks good, he said, nodding. How was your trip?

I didn't reply at once. I was still trying to process everything she and I had done on our island paradise, and all the confusion that remained with me upon our parting.

I was sure of only one thing -- I ached to touch my mysterious lover again. Her gentle kiss of farewell still lingered on my lips, and my nostrils flared as I remembered her expensive perfume. As usual, I had no idea when we would be reunited, as the decision was hers alone, and that, perhaps, was the most confusing thing of all.

The trip was fine, I said.

Damian scoffed. "Conversation over lunch is fine. A trip to the South Pacific with our mutual friend is hardly that."

Damian and she had a relationship that was apart from me, beginning with her very name, and I couldn't help feeling left out. I didn't know their reasons for secrecy because neither one would say, but the mystery surrounding her identity had long lost its allure.

Again, Damian waited for my reply, and then sighed. How're things going between you two?

You'll have to ask her, I said softly. She's the one in control.

Damian nodded. That's her, all right.

I grasped his upper arm and pulled him up short.

Who is she, Damian? I need to know.

Damian looked at my hand on his arm, regarded me silently for a moment, and shook his head.

I can't, buddy. You know that.

I think I've fallen in love with her, man.

Damian raised an eyebrow, and then shook his head again.

"Ohhh Jordy Jordy Jordy, he breathed. What a fool thing to do."

He squeezed my shoulder, as if that was supposed to make me feel better.

Damian owned a hillside home outside of Santa Fe. I'd been here several times over the years, and was still amazed. During the day, you could see the rugged hills and Ponderosa pines wandering down to the flatland, and at night, the city lights were sprayed across the valley darkness like glittering neon
