NUZO ONOH

Nuzo is an author of horror fiction from the African continent. She has featured on numerous media platforms, spearheading this new and unexplored horror subgenre. A British writer of African descent, Nuzo Onoh lived through the Biafran/Nigerian civil war as a child refugee, an experience that has continued to influence some of her works. She attended Queen’s School, Enugu before proceeding to the Quaker boarding school, The Mount School York, England and St Andrew’s Tutorial College, Cambridge, from where she obtained her A’ Levels. Nuzo holds both a Law degree and a Masters degree in Writing from The University of Warwick, England. She has delivered African Story-telling workshops in primary schools in Coventry as well as given a talk on alternative careers for law graduates at the prestigious Warwick University Law Society. Nuzo’s published works include, The Reluctant Dead (2014), Unhallowed Graves (2015) The Sleepless (2016) Dead Corpse (2017), as well as featuring in some anthologies. Nuzo enjoys playing the guitar and the piano as well as taking long walks, haunting cemeteries and ancient gravestones. She is a strong believer of The Law of Attraction.

Speak to Your Ancestors

One night a few months back, my mother visited me in a dream. She stood outside my back garden and turned her back to me. No matter how much I called out to her, she would not speak to me or turn to face me. She just stood in my back garden for what seemed a long time. When I woke up, I pondered briefly over the dream and then put it out of my mind.

Later that afternoon, the sun came out. It had rained all day. I decided my garden needed mowing. I dashed into the garage and pulled out the lawn mower and headed into the garden. I was about to turn it on and start mowing, when from nowhere, I recalled my dream and the fact that my mother had stood in my back garden. Suddenly, it dawned on me that I was not supposed to mow my lawn that afternoon. In that instant, my eyes saw things they never noticed before, the fact that my grass was still wet from the earlier rain and most importantly, that the electric lead had got entangled right underneath the mower blade and would have been cut to shreds as soon as I turned on the mower, electrocuting me in seconds!

As I returned the mower to the garage and thanked my late mother for her intervention from beyond, I recognised yet again, the awesome determination of our ancestors to keep us safe from harm.
