    Chapter 1

It was the middle of the night in the mid-1700s. The waves from the ocean crashed heavily onto the port of a lone island. Though it was well into the night there were lots of people bustling about. They were walking in the streets and drinking in the local tavern. They laughed and danced merrily to loud music. No one seemed to notice the silent ship approaching the port.

In a matter of minutes, the ship was anchored. Blood thirsty pirates streamed from the ship, down the board walk, and into the town. These were no ordinary pirates. It was a band made entirely of women. All of them were beautiful yet deadly. Everything went quiet when the town’s people noticed them.

The pirates stood in a sort of formation in the middle of the street. All of them looked around, taking in the surroundings. At the forefront of the group was the Captain, Chasity. She was stunning with her caramel skin, curvy shape, and long, dark, curly hair. She had on a long-sleeved, button up lavender shirt with a black corset on top. Her bust line was shocking. She also wore tight black pants and tall black boots with high heels and gold buckles. On her head, she wore a black pirate’s hat with a purple feather. Her extremely dark eyes seemed to pierce into the people when she looked at them.

To Chasity’s right side was her first mate and older sister, Janine. Janine was far different than Chasity. Her skin was a great deal lighter. She had dirty blonde hair and bright blue eyes. Unlike Chasity, Janine was not curvy at all. Her clothes were simpler: just a white button up shirt, black pants, and small black boots. Though she was different from Chasity Janine was still beautiful in her own way.

To Chasity’s left side was her younger sister Giselle. She was the only sister who had no authority. However, she didn’t really want it any other way. She enjoyed being a young and beautiful hellraiser. Giselle was petite, tan, and extremely thin. She favored both Chasity and Janine. Like Chasity she had no problem showing off her body. She wore a light blue button up peasant shirt that was cut off at the mid-drift. It had long sleeves that bared her shoulders. The top buttons of the shirt were undone, exposing her cleavage. Instead of pants she wore a short black skirt. Her thigh high black boots had heels as high as Chasity’s.

The rest of the female pirates were similar in dress and beauty. Chasity took one last look around and smirked. All showed flesh and wore bright colors and dark pants or skirts. Each of them also had tall black boots with high heels and golden buckles.

Take what you want, she announced suddenly, Leave no survivors and take only necessary prisoners.

The pirates giggled mischievously amongst each other as they disbursed, weapons drawn. Fear registered on the faces of the town’s people. Some were frozen in place and others ran for their lives. There were shrill screams echoing in the wind. Blood flowed freely on the ground in streams. Bodies collapsed here and there in painful death.

These pirates had serious blood lust and were merciless to boot. A few took young women and men as prisoners. Even Chasity had a prisoner in tow. Her boots clicked as she swished down the peer toward the ship. Behind her Chasity dragged a squirming young woman by her hair. The woman, who was in her early 20’s, kicked and screamed but in vain. Chasity was unfazed by her efforts. She dragged the woman up the plank and across the deck.

They stopped by a hole with an iron trap door. The trap door was already open, anticipating the haul. Chasity pulled the girl in front of her and lifted her by the shoulders. Then she effortlessly tossed the helpless, wiggly body into the hole. The young woman screamed as she fell the short distance and plopped onto the hard wood floor.

One by one the pirates tossed in their prisoners. There were a lot more than Chasity expected. When the trap door was closed and locked she gathered most of the pirates below deck for a meeting. Some were left above to man the ship and keep watch for anything suspicious. By the look on Chasity’s face and her body language, everyone knew that she was not happy.

She started by saying, I recall saying take few prisoners.

The group watched her. No one said a word.

That brig is filled to the brim, Chasity continued chastising.

We heard you, Janine spoke out as she entered the room, and we just wanted to have some fun.

The pirates laughed and yelled as they became rowdy. Janine had a sly grin on her face, as if she were proud of herself for causing chaos. Chasity laughed quietly, chillingly. The subtlety of it caused the group to fall instantly silent. Chasity continued to laugh mockingly as she paced over to Janine, who was now propped against a wall.

Having fun, eh? You were too busy collecting children for your nursery to collect prisoners, Chasity pointed out.

The group gasped and murmured amongst themselves. Janine’s smirk fell and turned into a scowl.

Chasity leaned into Janine’s face as she continued, Let’s not forget, dear sister, that I am the Captain.

This comment was a low blow. Chasity knew her sister couldn’t stand being the oldest and only having the status of first mate. Clearly their mother thought Chasity would make a more suitable captain. Again, the pirates laughed just as hearty and loud as before, if not more. Janine looked around in humiliation and disgust. She crossed her arms and glared at Chasity. Feeling satisfied Chasity stood back up and took her place in the center of the room.

Let’s divvy up the catch between ourselves and the swimmers, she announced.

The pirates cheered as they obeyed their captain. Chasity grabbed her sister Giselle and pulled her aside.

I want my prisoner taken to my quarters and prepared for my ritual, Chasity whispered.

Giselle smiled knowingly and turned to attend to the task. Though Giselle was smiling Chasity could not return the sentiment. She grimaced to herself as she walked to her room. Chasity would’ve cried if it wasn’t against her mighty principles. Her life felt empty, almost unbearable. The days were spent at sea. They had no permanent home. The only time they went ashore was to pillage and take prisoners. The prisoners weren’t regular prisoners. No, these people were going to be used for food.

These women were no ordinary pirates. No one really knew what they were: vampires, demons or beasts. The truth was they were mermaids. While in water their legs turned to fins. They could breathe naturally under water as if they had gills. While out of the water their fins would turn back into legs almost instantly.

There were those that decided to be pirates and those that decided to remain in the water. The pirates were known as walkers, and the others were called swimmers. The walkers and swimmers took turns providing food for one another. How they survived was primarily through consuming human blood. Unlike vampires they could also eat human food to get by. In fact, they loved it.

They also remained young and beautiful by bathing in human blood. Each walker or swimmer had their blood of choice. Some preferred young women, others preferred young men. Then there were those who had no preference. They just got blood from whomever they saw fit. Despite the fact they were kept younger by absorbing blood, the mermaids still aged, just very slowly.

Another strange thing about these creatures was the fact that there were no mermen. Because of this the mermaids couldn’t reproduce. Instead they had to try to live as long as possible, which was the reason for the blood bathing. None of them knew what happened to the men or why they stopped bearing children. Over the years they tried reproducing with humans but with no luck.

All of this was why Chasity was unhappy with her life. She depended on the life force of others like a mere parasite. No child would ever fill her empty womb. She was too restless to be a swimmer. Her body yearned for sailing and adventure. However, it always seemed like something was missing.

Just like Chasity ordered the young woman was in her room, waiting on her. She was chained by the window. The young woman whimpered uncontrollably when Chasity entered. Chasity went about her business as if the woman wasn’t there. She took her boots off and placed them in a corner. Then she placed her hat on a nearby hook.

On her dresser was golden mirror. Chasity gazed at herself sorrowfully. Her skin was beginning to look gray. Dark circles were forming under her eyes. She exhaled harshly at the sight before temporarily leaving the room. When Chasity returned Giselle was with her.

Help me with this corset, Chasity ordered.

The pitiful young woman continued to whine. Giselle groaned with irritation. Can’t you shut her up? she questioned.

Chasity answered, Oh let her get her last few cries out. I prefer to hear it before rather than during.

Giselle grinned to herself as she continued to loosen Chasity’s corset. Hmm, I like mine loud and squirmy, she said shyly.

Chasity smirked then said, Yes, but you, my darling sister, are mental.

Giselle chuckled in amusement as she loosened the last few ribbons. There, all done, she announced.

Chasity exhaled in relief, That feels so much better.

    Anything else? Giselle asked.

Yes, prepare my prisoner, Chasity told her.

Giselle turned to the young woman and smiled maliciously. The poor girl howled even louder. She backed as closed to the wall as she could.

    Please, no, she begged.

Giselle quickly walked over to her, unlocked the chains and snatched her up. The girl fell on the floor, refusing to walk. Giselle dragged her effortlessly.

Chasity called out to Giselle, Try not to damage her at all.

Giselle paused for a moment and pouted at her sister. You’re no fun sometimes, she complained.

Chasity looked at her sternly. I mean it, she warned.

Giselle rolled her eyes then said, Fine.

She then carried the young woman out of
