Kurt Coleman joined the security queue, patiently moving forward as passengers’ luggage got dumped onto the carousel. He glanced down at his fake passport, an image of a shaven-headed Afro-Caribbean man looking back with mild contempt—or was it nonchalance? Either way, it was him, five years earlier, shot in some shithole in Asia he could hardly remember or perhaps chose not to. He pocketed the passport and looked up to see grim-faced Thai security officials rifle through randomly picked hand luggage and usher through passengers.

The X-ray machines and body scanners had malfunctioned, causing a huge backlog of passengers waiting to get through security to the departure lounge. After a short delay, the customs security officials had decided to manually check some of the baggage. Coleman could tell they were rushing a bit more now.

There were still arguments happening around him. Passengers believed they would miss their flights, despite the repeated public announcements in various languages, ensuring that flights would be delayed and not be allowed to take off until everyone had boarded. These calmed the situation slightly, but tempers and anxieties remained high.

Coleman’s fingers brushed along the silicone-encased military-grade phone, which carried the signal app that was disrupting the security equipment and making it useless, if only for a short time. He carried a small drawstring bag on his massive shoulders and had donned a newly purchased Thailand tourist shirt, long shorts, and Nike shoes.

    Several queues cut across
