      The trio of travelers reined in their horses and stopped in the middle of the forest path. A dozen soldiers had appeared and blocked the way forward. They bristled with swords and spears. Ingrith eyed the rough-looking fighters and guided her horse farther away from the weapons.

      I need to speak to the Duke. I have an important message from the King, she said.

      One of the men smirked. Good luck getting him to listen.

      Ingrith raised an eyebrow and looked from soldier to soldier. The Duke could throw it in a fire for all she cared, but it was her responsibility to deliver it. The fighters all looked bored. She wondered just how often the Duke got in legal trouble.

      A guard shrugged and spat on the ground.

      Only you, then. The others aren’t allowed.

      Ingrith nodded. She turned to the two knights who were supposed to accompany her for the entire trip.

      I’ll be fine. He won’t hurt a noblewoman.

      Her two companions reluctantly turned around. Ahead, the Duke’s men parted to let her pass. They followed her closely and some of the soldiers began to whisper about her. Instead of softening the sounds of their conversation, the forest amplified every noise.

      Child-bearing hips, someone muttered.
