    Conclusions

    Introduction

As 3rd graders, we are aware of the water cycle, the moon phases, ecosystems, and the rotation and revolution of the earth, we understand a lot about what is happening around us. As adults, we go through life learning as much as we can to earn as much money as we can and live as well as we can. Living well means not only comfort and fulfillment of our needs and wants but also to have control over our lives so we don’t depend on others to choose. And if life doesn’t turn out to be an all-inclusive resort & spa, we feel cheated. It’s like somewhere between 3rd grade and adulthood we lose awareness of our surroundings and consciousness of ourselves, and we lose them for good.

We are not interested in how matter relates to the spirit, if it ain’t matter it doesn’t matter. What we can feel with our five senses is reality and what we can understand with our intellect is life. We are content with a fuzzy idea of God and that pretty much sums up our spiritual awareness.

Eastern culture seems to be more interested in providing clearer answers to life’s most pressing questions; who am I? Why am I here? Where do I come from? Why all the suffering? What happens after death? And so on. In the next pages, I will try to answer some of these questions using a combination of precepts from Western and Eastern philosophies.

I am more interested in the chakra metaphor than in its traditional definition. According to Hinduism, chakras are energy centers distributed vertically along the column, each chakra is a focal point of meditation, and chakra meditation does exactly that, it focuses on each chakra. You breathe into each chakra increasing the breathing rate slowly as you move your focus from the lower to the upper chakras.

Back to the metaphor, I suggest that chakras are associated with universal spiritual laws that we must learn and follow to detach from the material world. In the words of Caroline Myss ….gradually mastering the seductive pull of the physical world.

In the west, we use an assortment of symbols to explain the chakras. Each chakra has been assigned a color, a vibration, a musical note, a precious gem, an essential oil, a sacrament, a fruit, one zodiacal sign or two sometimes three, and an endocrine gland. I relate the chakras to challenges, spiritual laws, and briefly to the autonomic nervous system. Overcoming the challenges opens the chakras, allows the body to balance and energy to flow freely.

Kundalini is described as a huge volume of divine energy we are born with, it may very well be that body’s energy that flows through the chakras. This energy is coiled up at the base of the spine, the words energy coiled up suggest potential or stored energy ready to flow, to be transformed into motion or kinetic energy.

In the beginning, Kundalini was a subject of spiritual philosophy and later evolved into a physical expression or yoga. I like the imagery, the didactic tool that represents Kundalini, that serpentine energy that finds its way through the different chakras producing different levels of awareness until it finally reaches the crown chakra creating a radical change of consciousness. Kundalini rising causes illnesses, it means karma is flowing out. When an ailment starts to show up it means a soul burden is ready to be released. We should be thankful when a physical disorder takes hold of us, it means the soul is getting rid of a load, is being purified. How anyone could resist this imagery?

I will use chakras as a template to establish a path toward spiritual awakening and release. Awakening from illusions and release from attachments. Illusions are created by our body’s senses and release from our ego’s earthly attachments.

Even without practicing Kundalini yoga or Kundalini meditation, you may have a noticeable Kundalini awakening which is characterized by a sensation, a pop, or an intense moving pain in your column, if you don’t experience a Kundalini awakening, it’s okay I don’t think there is one universal way to achieve consciousness. I have experienced dark nights of the soul with physical symptoms similar to those described in the literature and attributed to unbalanced chakras and ascension. Are the dark nights the same as Kundalini awakening? Are all diseases karma releases? Probably, it ultimately depends on your faith and your experience, if you experienced symptoms similar to those described as Kundalini awakening, you had a Kundalini awakening. If you believe your karma caused your diseases, it did. If you believe your ailments are caused by the burdens of spirit being released, they are. I am not interested in convincing you of anything or argue about your faith. I am interested in knowing your experience and sharing mine. When it comes to birth and death, or vice versa, and everything in between we have many conundrums and we all want answers without the pun.

Spirit and soul are here used interchangeably to sidestep differences from culture to culture. Also, I only practice Vipassana meditation and obtain the best results when I wake-up and stay in bed, and when I run. There is no right way to meditate.
