Theodesius The Sage Book One - Neil E. Clement
One
Take me to your world, o sage, take me to your world!
begged the acolyte.
But this is something I cannot do
responded Theodesius the Traveler. You must take yourself to any place you wish to go.
"Please, master, please tell me how I can do this!" pleaded the acolyte.
What can I tell you … you who refuse to listen?
the Sage inquired. You whose eyes are blinded by false visions and whose ears are deafened with so much birdbrain babble that you cannot see and you cannot hear the truth of your own existence even when that truth is so pathetically obvious that it cannot be avoided by even the least educated amongst you?
Anything I say to you has all the impact of a feather floating on the breeze. You will hear my words and you may think you understand them,
Theodesius explained, but know you that you will not understand until you have spent time in reflection.
My words can only spark your own imagination and will only make complete sense to you when you seek to find the answers for yourself.
One cannot be taught, my son, one can only learn. Knowledge cannot be absorbed, it must be digested.
But master
whimpered the acolyte, are you saying my teachers waste their time trying to teach me? … Even you?
And with this the acolyte fell to his knees in exasperation, looking up at his master with arms outstretched with such a look of wretchedness on his face that his sage was touched and took pity upon him.
One of the first and most important things you need to learn
Theodesius replied quietly, as he gently grasped his student’s left arm and, with no apparent effort, lifted him off of his knees is how not to jump to conclusions without first examining all of the available facts.
I say to you that one cannot be taught, that one can only learn through one’s own efforts, and from this you reach the conclusion that all of your teacher’s efforts are delivered in vain, since none can truly teach you anything.
Sit you, and listen carefully
The Sage instructed his ardent student.
"I say to you: nay, my son, your teacher’s time is not wasted. You must think of your teachers as your guides, as advisers who serve as an invaluable asset in your life, because that is what they are. Your teachers will show you much of what there is to learn, they will guide you in your studies, and the best teachers will leave you with a love of learning, but to truly learn and to know is something you must do for yourself. Your teachers can only take you so far, and then you must seek your own counsel" Theodesius concluded.
Then guide me now, my most revered teacher, as my vision remains clouded, and I know not which way to turn
the acolyte beseeched his master. Guide me now that I may guide others in turn.
My words will fall as music falls on deaf ears to all those whose minds are closed
Theodesius began.
And it is these people, those of the closed mind, who are the most dangerous to the future of humanity, because such people cannot adapt and are forever stuck in their respective rut; but the real problem is not that such people exist; the danger is that they want everyone else to join them in their lunatic schemes, and many a crackpot fanatic is just charismatic enough to succeed in convincing others to follow their lead, even should this lead to their own destruction.
Master, how are we to identify such transgressors without your sage wisdom to guide us?
the acolyte responded with more than a little curiosity, as other novices began
