CHAPTER I
LEGEND AND HISTORY
NHA TRANG CITY - THE PATH OF FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT
According to many researchers, the name Nha Trang
was formed by the Vietnamese pronunciation of the Cham, which was originally Ya Trang
(meaning river Lau
). Nha Trang). From the name of the river, then only to the
land: Nha Trang is the name of the Vietnamese people called the land under their sovereignty since 1653. Over three centuries, experiencing many historical changes, Nha Trang is now the center of politics, economics, culture, science and technology and tourism of Khanh Hoa province.
In terms of Nha Trang
, in the Thien Nam Tu Chi Lo Toa
, a map of Vietnam written by the Do Ba family in the second half of the 17th century saw the name Nha Trang Mon
( Nha Trang door) (1). In another map dating back to the end of the 17th century called Nam Gia Nam Nam Binh
, also named Nha Trang Hai
(Nha Trang seaport) (2). In the ancient Vietnamese bibliography, these are probably the earliest documents referring to this place.
In the correspondence of missionaries from Europe to Cochinchina in the early eighteenth century, we first see the place Nha Trang
recorded in Latin letters. For example, in a letter dated May 31, 1715 by the French bishop Marin to the director of the seminary recounts a shipwreck of the Dutch on the Paracel island, the author refers to a literal place As follows: Un port nommé NHATLANG
(one door named Nha Trang) (3). In another letter dated October 16, 1718 he wrote: le canton de NHATLANG
(total Nha Trang) (4). What is remarkable here is how NHA TRANG recording with NHATLANG. In fact, phonetically, Vietnamese in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries contained some consonant consonants such as BL, ML, and TL ... which later ceased to be translated into other consonants. This translates into TR (Annam - Lusitan - Latin Dictionary
by Alexandre de Rhodes, first published in 1651, with the words TLEM = HEIGHT, TLU = TRUU, LEAVE = OVER ...) (5). -
From 1653 to the mid-nineteenth century, Nha Trang was still a wilderness and wildlife area of Ha Bac, Vinh Xuong district, Dien Khanh district.
