The history of Bhutan goes back many hundreds of years. It is a small, beautiful and very unspoilt Himalayan country both proud of and very protective of its distinctive Buddhist culture. It is the only carbon-negative country in the world and is famous for its Gross National Happiness Index, a measure of their citizens’ well-being preferred to the more usual economic growth statistics.

Bhutan became a kingdom in 1907 when Ugyen Wangchuk ascended to the throne as the first ‘Druk Gyalpo’, or Dragon King. Prior to that the country was ruled by ‘Druk Desi’, or secular overlords who ruled in conjunction with the most senior Buddhist lamas.
