ABOUT THE AUTHOR
INTRODUCTION
After decades of war and isolation, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam has opened up to the outside world. During the first half of the 20th century Vietnam was a French colony, and for five decades of that century war dominated the country. In those five decades the Vietnamese fought the Japanese, the French, the Americans, the Cambodians and the Chinese. And Vietnam still maintains a large military force, the largest in Southeast Asia.
Vietnam has a rural society. More than two-thirds of the population lives in the countryside and more than half its work force engages in agriculture. Life in many villages continues pretty much as it has for hundreds of years.
A Communist nation, Vietnam is emerging from a long period of poverty. Reform-minded officials have turned the country to a more open, market-oriented economy. The economic shift, which began in the late 1980s, has produced results, raising the standard of living for many Vietnamese. Once a net importer of food, Vietnam is now one of the world’s largest rice exporters.
