INTRODUCTION
Kenya is a developing country renowned for its wildlife and game parks. It is East Africa’s most advanced nation and has one of Africa’s most developed economies.
The country’s official name is the Republic of Kenya. The word is pronounced KEN-ya, not KEEN-ya, the British pronunciation which recalls the country’s period of colonial rule. Nairobi (pronounced nye-ROW-bee) is its capital.
Early in this century Kenya did not exist. A wide variety of tribal groups inhabited the land. But by the 1920s Britain had established a colony there, ruling both the land and its people and bringing significant cultural change.
By the time Kenya became a free country on December 12, 1963, what fifty years before had been a collection of independent tribes had become an independent nation, a unified country. And not
