    One

    Remains of One

I think they’re nuts. said the resort manager

Yeah, so do I. agreed the chef. They stood at the massive windows watching the treasure hunting crew load up their gear in the freezing cold.

Just how many have attempted this? asked the chef.

    We’ve lost count.

    Do any ever come back?

    Nope.

The treasure hunters climbed into the groomer then slowly headed down the fresh trails toward the mountainous landscape. They were fully stocked with phones, maps, GPS systems, food, water, a generator, and weapons – in case they came across any wild animals, and anything else they might need in their quest to find the long lost resort.

They knew many crews before them had attempted the same mission and failed. Failed was putting it mildly. They simply never returned, and were never, ever found.

Except for one, a body that had washed up to the shoreline of the lake when the weather warmed up, but that was 20 years ago. The description of the remains was to gruesome to even imagine. They said he looked like he was half-eaten, the back side of his

corpse was wide open revealing some bones and what little organs remained. When they turned him over he was unrecognizable. His face was half missing, and his body was shredded more than the snow on the ski runs.

If that wasn’t horrible enough, sticking in his chest was a ghastly, boney, blue skeleton hand. It looked like it was reaching for his heart, and it had froze. That definitely ruled out wild animals.

Nobody wanted to even begin to imagine where the hand had come from. In the autopsy report it stated the hand was over 105 years old.

Many people believed the story was just a made up tale to scare people away from the dangerous back country, and to frighten treasure hunters from seeking the lost resort. Those that dared to hunt for the missing resort refused to believe it. It didn’t matter how many of them were never seen again.

Samuel Randall, also known as Sam Scam, had a commanding presence. His tall, muscular physic overshadowed people when he entered a room. His face was angular with black eyes, and he had a thick black mustache that curved down to a tuft of black hair in-between his lip and chin, which added to his sinister look.

He always dressed in black from head to toe, from his large Dakota style cowboy hat to his usual black jeans and shirt. Even though it was 1945, he held on to his cowboy heritage, which included his wild temper.

He was one of the richest men in the Lake Tahoe region, and had inherited much of his wealth from his ancestors. The Randall’s along with the Hardin family had founded and operated the Cutshaw Mine. It had been one of the most prosperous mines in the area, until it was depleted.

Their great, great grandfathers had been best friends and together they built an empire. The two men were business partners for over 75 years, and they always got along.

But it was totally different for the two great grandsons, Samuel Randall & Nolan Hardin. It seemed they never agreed on anything. Yet, they had no choice but to work side-by-side because of all the joint-owned businesses. So, with their abundance of wealth they decided to build one of the most exclusive resorts in Lake Tahoe.

Nolan Hardin was Randall’s opposite. He was of medium height and a thin man with short, light brown hair. He had blue eyes, round cheeks with dimples and was clean shaven. He was soft spoken, smiled often and always wore a perfectly pressed suit and tie.

Randall and Hardin were not only different in appearance and personality. They usually disagreed on business plans, too. This caused major arguments between them.

But this time it was worse than ever. Hardin and Randall couldn’t agree on anything with the development of their elaborate resort and casino. There were numerous occasions when they argued in public on how or where it should be constructed. At one point they had such a quarrel, the two were jailed overnight for physically fighting. It seemed Randall started the fight when he punched Hardin in the face; although onlookers said that Hardin seemed to quietly taunt him.

Hardin would always shake his head and tell people he was worried about Randall’s latest plan. He said there was something about the land that bothered him.

Harlo’s parents drove him all the way from Ocean City to Dulles International Airport to catch his plane to Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

Harlo was thrilled to get an approved leave of absence from school for the tour. During the drive he chatted with his parents about the boarding and shows, and the close friendships he had made. Not wanting to freak his parents out, he didn’t tell them anything about the horribly, frightening mysteries they had solved. Yet, while chatting he was also on his laptop scrolling through paranormal websites. It was something he was still passionate about, even after their life threatening supernatural encounters.

When they arrived at the airport drop-off area, Harlo hugged and kissed them good-bye. As much as he was going to miss them, he couldn’t wait to see his friends on the tour – the Ghost Board Posse.

It had been a long three and a half months and although they kept in touch with emails, texting, and video chat, it just wasn’t the same as spending time with his bro’s. Bro’s he laughed to himself, as he instantly thought of Pal and his outrageous sense of humor.

Harlo quickly found his way to his gate, boarded the plane and settled in for the flight. There were two stops along the way. Lake Tahoe was three hours behind Maryland, so it was going to be a long day.

Harlo managed to fall asleep after the second stop, and when the plane finally landed in Reno he woke up with a jolt.

Seconds later he felt his watch vibrating with messages. He knew it had to be the Posse, but when he swiped his watch he was shocked to see that the messages were from GT. It gave him shivers when he thought about what GT stood for – Ghost Talker.

The last time he had heard from GT was right after their showing in Hawaii. It was also right before a mysterious reporter asked them tons of weird questions, like how they came up with the name Ghost Board Posse.

Plus, you couldn’t see the reporter’s face. He was wearing an oversized, wide brimmed hat and a huge overcoat with the collar pulled up, and it was in Hawaii in 87 degree weather! After the reporter hurriedly questioned them, he immediately disappeared into the crowd. Then Ira insisted they answer more questions.

Harlo decided not to read the message. He was definitely tired of GT, Ghost Talker, or whoever he was, and his creepy games. He almost lost his life because of this strange internet person, or whatever it was. He decided he would write back later, but this time he wanted answers, honest answers, and if he didn’t get them then he would be done with him.

As he exited the plane ramp and turned the corner into the airport he heard a familiar voice, Hey! Harlo! My bro!

There was Pal in all his Hawaiian glory, wearing a winter coat with his brightly colored flowered shirt and shorts underneath, and smiling ear to ear. They quickly embraced, and then immediately backed away from each other and shook it off.

Yeah Man, geez, how the heck are you? asked Harlo.

"Already freezin’ my you know what off, that’s how. Look at it out there; I am not made for this part of the planet. Pal insisted as he took a picture with his phone and immediately posted it saying, Help me! I don’t want to run into Abominable!"

Harlo laughed, as they stared out the airport window at the cold, gray skies and breathtaking view of massive snow covered mountains.

I’m ready to head back to my beautiful, warm, sunny Hawaii, like now. These few extra pounds I put on aren’t going to keep me warm out there. laughed
