Introduction
Feng shui is an ancient art that has, over the span of 5000 years, weaved into more and more intricate theories, solutions and schools of thought. Feng Shui on a Dime makes feng shui accessible, both monetarily and practically. Rather than learning about all the different feng shui schools or getting bogged down in theory and history, you can look at the specific issues you wish to cure as the pendulum in your life sways.
There are five life areas that typically seem to be on our minds. The flux and balance of each may vary: at some points we are more interested in our careers, at others our relationships, but our compass and intent tend to point in one of five directions—health, wealth, career, love and family.
Many feng shui books focus on the different life areas found on the Ba-gua Map, or Feng Shui Octagon: Wealth, Fame, Marriage, Children, Helpful People, Career, Knowledge and Family. Feng Shui on a Dime takes a different approach, focusing on common conundrums and offering simple, inexpensive solutions to affect change in the life areas we want to improve. We explore both traditional fix-its and more contemporary solutions.
We would be remiss if we didn’t offer a very basic explanation of the core principles behind feng shui before delving into specific issues and their solutions.
What Is Feng Shui?
Feng shui is the ancient Chinese art of placement. Practitioners believe that the arrangement of your environment—the placement of surrounding objects; the location and shape of your home; the street you live on; the type of materials your furniture is made of; the colors you use to decorate, and many other intricacies—significantly affects your personal and professional lives.
East and West have comingled long enough now that many of us have heard of chi. According to traditional Chinese culture, chi is the life force that permeates, well…everything. This invisible energy runs through our bodies, our minds, our environments; it is the vibrational play of energy that swirls through our interactions with other people and our surroundings.
Our physical environment can stifle or stimulate our chi, thereby affecting every component of our lives. Feng shui helps to correct blocked chi, opening up a free flow of energy between our self and our universe. Think of feng shui as earth acupuncture. Stimulate the right point, and voila! You’ve just aligned the earth—with your chi—with your desire.
But is there any scientific basis for a belief in chi?
If we look through the lens of Western science, then no. Empirical effects and subjective experience aren’t enough to substantiate that which can’t be seen. But if we consider chi in light of physics and not chemistry, we can discover that there is indeed a unity behind all existence, and a never-ending exchange between external stimuli and internal reactions.
Newton’s Third Law of Classical Mechanics states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
And quantum mechanics has shown that objects can exert influence without making any direct contact.
Consider the continual interplay of energy between your body and the earth. The earth is electrically charged, and science has shown that when you connect with the earth—standing barefoot on grass let’s say—electrons pass from the ground, through the soles of your feet, and into your body. This technique, called grounding or earthing, has been shown to alleviate pain, improve sleep, calm inflammation and elevate well-being.
Science has also shown that humans (and all of existence for that matter) actually radiate visible light. This light is 1000 times less intense than the light levels visible to the naked eye, but some people swear they can see it. Auras sound familiar? Those in the science world refer to it as the biophoton field, and it’s been proven to process, store and retrieve information that controls your biological processes.
Healing therapies that access the bioenergetic field—modalities like reiki, acupuncture, acupressure and pranic healing—all attempt to activate and re-balance stifled chi.
How Does Feng Shui Work Its Magic?
Rearranging the placement of furniture, adding a vibrant green plant to a specific section of your home, painting your front door red—cures such as these can positively impact your life, but not without the most imperative element: Intention.
Is placing a red sheet between the mattress and box spring of your bed really going to activate your love life? Or is it the positive and determined thought behind such an action that stimulates change throughout your life? Every feng shui cure should be accompanied by a specific desire and well-planned Intention. Intention is arguably 70% of feng shui’s effectiveness.
Action and Intention is the dynamic duo behind any life-altering precept. The link between think and do is the basis of the popular Law of Attraction principle and healing modalities such as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).
Similarly, the importance of implementing Action and Intention is the foundation of all major religions.
Jesus taught: "What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? So also faith by itself, if it does
