    Just COIL Fiction?

    D.I. Telbat

Lydia Morris leaned against her car in the growing darkness of a shopping mall parking lot. Her eyes were glued to her Kindle screen as she read story after story of Christian triumph. When the parking lot lights blinked on and all the other cars had left, Lydia remained, her heart drawn into the passion and boldness in the lives of God's people. Her soul cried out to be part of the mighty things that God was doing around the world, especially with an organization like COIL. But, of course, COIL was just fiction.

When a man quietly approached her from the side, Lydia didn't notice him until it was too late. He struck her once on the jaw making her fall to the ground. Lydia's eReader clattered across the pavement and she winced as her elbows were scuffed to the bone. Glancing around her, she found she was completely alone with her attacker.

Give me your wallet! He stood over her with a knife, his hand trembling. His voice seemed uncertain behind a bandana that covered half his face. And your ring! Now! Money and jewelry!

I don't wear any jewelry. Lydia crawled to pick up her eReader. The frame was cracked, but the screen was still shining. And I just maxed out my card getting bread and milk.

You're lying! The man turned left and right, checking for witnesses. There was still no one around. Empty your pockets!

Lydia felt blood trickle from her elbow wounds. She was no COIL agent, but she didn't need to be part of COIL to live boldly for Christ, even in an Ohio parking lot.

Silver and gold I don't have for you, Lydia said as she rose to her feet, but what I do have, I give to you. Here, you need to read this.

She offered him the eReader. He yanked it from her hand, and Lydia thought he was about to smash it on the pavement, but he hesitated. Something had caught his eye, and in those seconds, he read a few lines, then a little more.

Lydia prayed as he read. At that frantic moment, she couldn't recall which story of the COIL collection she'd been reading, but she believed God would use whatever was on the screen. After all, COIL stories weren't just about entertaining readers. They were about motivating hearts toward simple faith in an extraordinary God!

What's this about? The attacker pointed his knife at Lydia. Some person saved these people's lives? So what?

Their lives seemed lost. Their souls seemed beyond saving. Lydia lifted her chin. She didn't consider herself a courageous woman. After all, she was only an office administrator. But God's strength gave her . . . something undefinable. When our hearts are the most troubled, that's when God's love is the most discernible. You must know the story of the Cross. You're looking for valuables. From my heart, that's the most valuable thing I can share with you.

This story is just fiction! The man held up the eReader. I need money—cash, now!

"No, you want money. I'm giving you what you need. Look. You want what's in my pocket? Fine. Lydia drew a folded church bulletin from her back pocket. One of the elders' home address was printed on the bottom. Look at this. See this address? This is where you can find what you're really looking for."

The attacker accepted the bulletin and held it up to the parking lot lights.

    What's this address for?

A man you need to talk to. You've got the guts to go to him. I know you do. Your past won't matter to him. He'll just embrace you. He'll care for you, like Jesus would.

You really don't have any money?

No. I wish I did. Lydia shrugged. I'd give it to you. Just go see that guy. His name is Paul. He cares about people like you and me.

The man seemed to waiver on his feet. The bulletin, the knife, and the eReader seemed to be too many items for him to hang on to. He hesitantly offered the device back to her, and she accepted it. When she thought he was about to say something more, he turned and ran away.

Lydia felt the tears on her cheeks as she watched him disappear beyond the lights. She needed to call Paul right away to tell him he might have a visitor. Her fear had been real, but somehow, the words to speak to her aggressor had flowed out. Somehow, she hadn't fainted. Somehow, she had spoken like a confident Christian.

Somehow? Lydia chuckled to herself, and held up her eReader, knowing that Christ had inspired her. Obviously, these COIL stories aren't just fiction!

The End of Just COIL Fiction?

    Recruited for Christ

This first group of stories takes a snapshot of several different lives. These lives seem to be unlikely positions from which to serve Christ, but when an offer is made, faithfulness is just a step of repentance away. Each of us can, with a little creativity and prayer, adjust our current lives to involve ourselves in something useful for Christ. We each have a ministry waiting for us to answer to, especially locally.

    Noah

In this first story in this series, we meet a man with a shameful past and a preset situation that seems too difficult to leave behind. It has been of increasing importance to me to show that the strong in the world are still in need of Jesus Christ.

From a store window reflection, Noah Laden watched the tall black man in a gray suit. He had to be a Fed, the way he pretended to be waiting for a bus. Noah considered his escape routes, but traffic was bad in the city this time of day. He'd known the US government would come for him sooner or later, even though he'd not broken any laws—technically. Not in the US, anyway.

Farther down the street, Noah noticed another man in a blue suit. Oh, he met a woman with a baby stroller and they walked away together. If the black man across the street was really a Fed, he was probably working with
