    Seamus hunched their shoulders and burrowed deeper into the scant protection of the twenty-four hour diner’s leeward side entrance. They could’ve just gone inside, but there was something about seeing Winnie run up to them that made the cold and the stinging in their cheeks worth it. It could’ve been her smile, or the jangle of her latest store-bought occult jewelry, or maybe it was the urge they always had to run with her, no matter where she was going, just for the joy of it.

    Time seemed to trickle by every bit as dreadfully as the actual ice water that trickled down their back, but Seamus refused to move. It was a matter of principle. Winnie had said she was coming, and here they would stay.

    Winnie was an old friend, older than almost anyone else Seamus had left. When they saw her coming some time later, Seamus started hopping excitedly in place without being quite aware of it. They tried to force themself still, with some little success.

    Winnie! They chanted, higher pitched than they usually liked, but with Winnie it wasn't even a passing thought on their mind. Winnie! Win!

    Winnie smiled that ear to ear smile that showed off every inch of the gap between her oversized front teeth. She laughed, not at them but out of delight, and raised hands covered in fluffy lavender gloves to wave. She was a self proclaimed recovering goth, and had thus introduced softer colors to her wardrobe, and softer fabrics that sometimes made Seamus’s teeth itch.

    Hallo, duck. It feels like a month since I last saw you! she teased, and prodded at Seamus’s chest. Have you actually eaten anything since our last lunch? Something edible? She added, when they opened their mouth.

    Seamus closed it, and gave a bashful shrug. They didn't know if the neighbor’s pet chicken counted as edible. It'd been skinny, and had a bones they could almost still feel caught in their teeth. They prodded at their teeth as the two of them passed the "OPEN:
