    Good to Lay Eyes

    Sweet! Pleasant! May be nice

    Give it a try

You’re sure it will make me wise?

    Is that not a lie?

    No, dear

    Just draw near

    Taste and see

    How nice it will be.

So to it, I drew nigh

    Without letting him know

Plucked, tasted, and asked him to try

And he also didn’t say no.

Little did we realize it was a death trap

    Hunting for our precious lives

Then, like babes on his lap

He nursed us with staggering knives.

Did we have to eat again?

Have we not learnt from the first?

No more chance to be hopeful or gay

    For hell’s gate is burst

    To contain us all

Now help is too late to call

    Sweet! Pleasant! It is nice

Now this is the real try

    With him, now we meet

    And with a broad smile, he greets;

    Good to lay eyes

    RODALINE ARAANA KING

    Photograph

    In summer Seth saw

    The picture of Mom.

He said we had the same laugh,

Our tongues lolling out like a dog’s

As our smiles stretched so wide

    Our mouths became caverns

Echoing with the joy our chests could not cage.

    I didn’t believe him until

    Dad suddenly said it too

On the early morning dew-dropping drive to Lansing.

You look more and more like her every day.

    His words fissured

    The dam between us,

    The tide rushing in

    And drowning us
