Dr Muhammad Manazir Ahsan is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The Islamic Foundation, and Rector of the Markfield Institute of Higher Education, Leicester, UK. He has published and lectured extensively on Islam and Muslims in Britain. He is also the Editor of The Muslim World Book Review, a quarterly journal devoted to analysing the latest publications on Islam and the Muslim World. He has chaired several major Muslim and interfaith organisations in the UK and has received an MBE for his contribution to interfaith and community activities.

FOREWORD

One of the major objectives the Islamic Foundation has set for itself is the preparation of suitable educational materials for transmitting the faith, values and culture of Islam to the young Muslim generation. Unless Muslims succeed in transferring their rich heritage from one generation to another, they will soon lose their identity and the rising generations will live a life devoid of any meaning and purpose.

Books are a very important medium of education; both as teaching aids and as materials for general reading. The Children’s Book of Islam: Part One was published by the Islamic Foundation in 1976 as a first step in its larger Islamic Education Project and was intended to be used as a basic text book on the fundamentals of Islamic faith for children in the 8-11 years age group. We are grateful to Allah subhanahu taˋala, that it was received with great enthusiasm and has already undergone one reprint. It has also been published in the French, German and Dutch language editions.

The Children’s Book of Islam: Part Two, which is now in your hands, is a continuation of Part One and deals with Islamic Worship (‘Ibadah) or what is commonly known as the five pillars of Islam. This book is also intended for the 8-11 years age group. I hope this book will meet the persistent demand for a text book on this very important aspect of Islamic teaching and will fulfil the promise we made when publishing Part One of The Children’s Book of Islam.

Initially drafted by my worthy colleague and brother, Dr. M. M. Ahsan, then reviewed and revised within the Foundation, the final version is now before you. We have tried to keep the language simple and lucid and present the ideas in a manner which a child, I hope, will find interesting and attractive.

We have this time decided to publish the Work Book along with the main book in the same binding and hope that this will facilitate its use.
