    Episode 1

Oh no, thought Gnipper as she woke covered in sweat. It can’t be. I worked too hard.

She swung her legs over the side of the bed and jumped down. It was morning, which meant the day was finally here. The cold air of a fresh dawn filled her with dread. Nothing in the entire world could be worse—today was her birthday. Today she was twelve. Today she was a gnit-wit.

She took a step up onto a small wooden stool and looked in her mirror. She didn’t look any different than yesterday. There were the same bright green eyes, the same out of control pink hair, the same crooked smile.

But none of that mattered. She was different. She felt different. She had failed her community.

But she had a plan to change all that. She just needed to put it into action.

Taking one last look at her uncovered head, Gnipper sighed. She’d earn that hat. She might not have it before her twelfth birthday, but she’d have it before the night was over and then no one would have the right to call her a gnit-wit.

    ––––––––

Good morning, Professor Tallhat, said Gnipper, greeting her father with the formal title he most appreciated. She had tried calling him father when she was younger, but he had promptly informed her that he didn’t spend years of his life studying to be a father. Since then, he was always just Professor Tallhat.

Good morning, Gnipper. I’d wish you a happy birthday, but it hardly seems appropriate to celebrate having a gnit-wit daughter.

She winced. The words hurt more than she expected. She blinked back tears as she poured his morning tea. She just needed to hold it together for a few more hours.

The Professor adjusted his ivory white, pointed, felt hat. Gnipper knew it was to taunt her.

Please, he said, at least tell me you’re working on something? I am Lord of the Board of Knowledgeable Gnomes, you know. I can’t very well be telling my underlings that I’ve got a gnit-wit at home twiddling her thumbs and not coming up with a single decent idea.

She knew. He reminded her every single day. He was the gnome with the largest hat, so he was in charge of the community. She bit her tongue. She might not have invented anything worthy of her hat yet, but she swore that one day she was going to have so many scientific breakthroughs that her hat would reach the sky, and the rest of the gnomes would chant her name as they crowned her the new Lord of the Board. She just had to wait for him to take a sip. Just one sip should do the trick.

I know, Professor, Gnipper responded, trying hard to keep the annoyance out of her voice. I’m working on a great idea right now. I think you’ll be very proud once you see it.

    ––––––––

Really? remarked Professor Tallhat. A skeptical look darted out from under his black spectacles as he looked up from his paper. What exactly is it you’re working on? Do I need to warn the neighbors about this one? Professor Tallhat chuckled.

"No, not this time. This time it’s very safe, I promise. I can’t tell you yet though...it’s a
