When his buddy brings him a new customer, Wilhelm Smith, Jethro finds himself tempted to give in to his attraction for men for only the second time in his life. He’s straightforward in his attraction and direct in his desires—he also refuses to be a dirty little secret. One night, Jethro realizes just how different Wilhelm actually is. Shifters are real and Wilhelm is one. Can Jethro accept his new reality and figure out a way to openly incorporate a male partner into his life, or will he miss out on the best thing that could ever happen to him?

    Kontra’s Menagerie: Book Twenty-One

    Dedication

The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other’s life.

    ~Richard Bach

    Chapter One

Jethro Gunther felt the vibration of his phone, which was attached to his hip. With a couple swift turns of his wrist, he finished tightening the screw embedded in the motorcycle he was working on, then put down the socket wrench. He grabbed the grease rag tucked into the back pocket of his jeans as he straightened.

Once his hands were mostly clean, Jethro pulled his phone off the clip on his belt and turned off the alarm. He headed toward the wide door that led to his business’s showroom floor, which was attached to the mechanic’s bays. His motorcycle shop had an expansive space, showcasing several dozen bikes, and the alarm had told him that someone had just walked through the front door.

While Jethro sold a number of bikes each month, it was actually his mechanic’s bay that really set his place apart from several others in town. He was known for his ability to customize a bike in whatever way someone wanted. Jethro could often take the standard floor model and trick it out to be the customer’s perfect fantasy.

Jethro strode into his shop, glancing around the room. He grinned widely when he spotted the man strolling between bikes, perusing them slowly. The huge bear of a man had steered many a customer his way over the years.

Well, look what the cat dragged in, Jethro called, striding toward the guy. Kontra Belikov. What the hell are you doing here?

When the man turned to face Jethro, he couldn’t help but think Kontra looked almost exactly the same as when he’d met him almost seventeen years before. If Jethro had to guess, he’d say Kontra was in his sixties, but he didn’t appear a day over forty. The man stood six-foot-six with a huge, heavily muscled frame and the oddest silver highlighting in his shaggy brown hair. His dark eyes held friendly warmth as he held out his hand.

Hey, Jethro, Kontra greeted. "Can’t stop in Sturgis without checking out my favorite motorcycle shop and saying hi to the owner."

Jethro took Kontra’s offered hand and was immediately pulled into a one-armed man-hug. The big man slapped him on the back a couple of times, then eased away, releasing him. Kontra’s dark eyes twinkled as he swept his gaze up and down him.

While Jethro knew that Kontra was as gay as the day was long, he realized his friend wasn’t checking him out. Instead, Kontra just seemed to like to know his friends were well. On top of that, when Kontra had been through Jethro’s town a few years back, Kontra had introduced him to his partner, Tim—a five-foot-ten, muscular, hazel-eyed hottie.

Resting his hands on his hips, Jethro returned Kontra’s assessing look. Still looking as fantastic as ever. One of these days you’re going to have to tell me your secret.

Kontra’s low chuckle seemed to rumble from deep in his chest. Well, not much to tell. The corners of his lips teased into a warm smile. Combination of good genetics, loads of fresh air, and plenty of exercise. Kontra finished his comment with a lascivious smile and a wink.

Jethro barked a laugh, clutching his chest for a moment. Shaking his head, he got a hold of himself. Still with Tim, then? Upon seeing Kontra’s pleased expression and nod, Jethro asked, How is your cute hottie doing, eh?

Excellent. Just excellent, Kontra told him. Cocking his head, he crossed his arms over his chest. "When are you going to find that special someone to take care of you, huh?"

How do you know I haven’t? Jethro countered, lifting his left brow.

Inhaling deeply, Kontra let the breath out through pursed lips as his smile turned wry. Let’s just call it a hunch.

Yeah, yeah. Jethro shook his head. He didn’t know how Kontra knew he was still single, but the man was right. Don’t need to be taken care of. Just the occasional biker-bunny bed-warmer, he claimed, referencing the women who hung out at biker bars just for a chance to ride on the back of a motorcycle and take a quick tumble in the hay with the driver.

Kontra grunted, shaking his head. Guess I don’t have much room to talk. Spent years doing that myself. Clearing his throat, he pointed through the window at a
