Just Thinking - Colin Chappell
Forward
This book is a collection of verses written over a number of years. It is my sincere hope that you, the reader, will be able to relate to the manner in which I wrote them. If a piece was emotional to me, I would hope that it could also be emotional to you. If I have incorporated situations or circumstances which I found thought-provoking, it is hoped that you will also be encouraged to pause and ponder.
I have had no formal education in verse but I do, however, know how I feel and what motivates me to write. I write honestly. My writings are, quite simply, me!
Finally, and most importantly, all the proceeds from book sales will be directed to my daughter, Melanie-Anne, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2007. She is still fighting, but the treatment programs have taken their toll and she is unable to hold down a paying job for a variety of reasons. She is therefore dependant on benefits from her disability provider.
Melanie has no cable TV and no Internet, but does survive in this electronic age with her phone, which is also her reminder of meetings, her complex medication times, and of anything else that she is otherwise likely to overlook.
She uses her time to volunteer for non-profit organizations, and has been involved in giving some dignity to the women who are living on the streets in Vancouver’s downtown East-side. When she is up to it, Melanie is also performing a befriending/preliminary assessment function (on a volunteer basis for a counseling service) of individuals who are fighting poverty.
She has also written a number of poems, two of which are included in this book – The Crane
and The Toque
Enjoy!
Colin.

My Friend Ray
Ray is a German Shepherd/Rottweiler X who was rescued by the Oakville & Milton Humane Society from a life as a stray. He had no identification on him; showed no signs of any training, and appeared to lack any social skills. He was nervous when in the proximity of both people and/or dogs and his solution to those circumstances was to lunge and bark to make them go away. It was very effective.
When I was contemplating adopting my first dog, I envisaged a mature, good size, easy going and huggable kind of dog. I am not totally sure what happened, but it would seem that Ray adopted me… and the rest is history. For the record, he only met my criteria in size. At seventy-five pounds, he was certainly a good size dog!
The story covering the first eighteen months of this unlikely partnership is found in my book Who Said I was up for Adoption?
which is available from all major on-line book stores.
This section is simply a tribute to a wonderful dog. He has been the focus of our lives for a few years now and, when people compliment us on what a good job we have done with him, my response is always the same. All the time, effort, and patience in the world would have accounted for nothing without Ray’s cooperation!
He deserves such a tribute as his own section in this book.
A Man, a Dog, and the Sky
Laying on the grass
On a summer afternoon,
And watching clouds caress the blue sky.
Listening to birds, as they sing their songs,
But I’m thinking of… just you and I.
***
Leaves gently dancing
To the tune of the wind,
With their branches swaying in time.
Insects are buzzing their own harmonies,
While I’m thinking of… just you and I.
***
And even at night,
When stars fill the sky,
It’s so easy to lose track of time.
There’s much to see but… so easy to dream
About… just you and I.
***
And on rainy days;
We both look outside,
And wish that the weather was fine.
But soon it will stop and then… we’ll both go
To play in the garden… you and I.
***
You wanted to be friends.
I was rather surprised.
A nose touch… yours to mine
Was all it took to melt my heart.
A nose touch… and a moment of time.
***
Perhaps our souls indeed did touch.
The inner me perhaps was found.
Perhaps it was just your big brown eyes
Saying so much… yet with no sound.
But that’s history… to you and I.
***
So where do we go
From here my dear friend?
Where do we go
