Ellen leaned against her husband as the transport lumbered off the ground, seemed to hesitate, and then thundered toward the clouds. She’s gone,

She’s gone,
her husband repeated.
A sob burst from one of them and, at the sound, they turned to one another, clinging and weeping.
Under the power of the light drive, it would take thirty-eight days to reach the Core. Jessica climbed out of her coffin-size berth to roam the ship. It had taken four years to save for passage. By Galactic law, individuals were not allowed to leave a planet in debt, and that included the price of passage. Of course, her careful parents had seen to it that she had a sizable stake to start with. They must have been saving nearly as long as she had. There was—they took pains to point out—enough to get back home if she changed her mind.
Jessica stopped in the doorway to the ship’s lounge. Some fellow travelers had already found their way here. They were all like her—uniformly young, eager. Their faces tentatively made up to match the fashion magazines that had made their long passage from the Core Their bodies unmodified because the Rim worlds did not require such frivolities, and what the Rim worlds did not require… Jessica’s face
