“Chester is a world class fantasist.” —THE BEST REVIEWS

After nine centuries—and ten lifetimes—the Emperor Kostimon is dead, and darkness sweeps the land. The emperor's young widow, Elandra, has fled the shadows of war with her champion, the warrior Caelan—the man she has grown to love.

But is the emperor truly dead? Or can the power of the shadow god bring him back? Elandra must make a fateful decision—to fulfill her destiny on the throne, or to follow her heart. And the warrior Caelan must stand and fight—for his life, for his love, and for the entire kingdom.

I found the characters compelling if not always consistent. The world building was clearly there, but could have been fleshed out a bit more. I loved the magic, story and progression of the characters, but I felt that the execution fell a bit flat towards the end. The ending... was predictable and somewhat anticlimactic. I never truly felt like the characters were in any danger though the entire book is a whirlwind of action and calamity. The big showdown between good and evil came down to less than five minutes of reading, and that was where the story lost credibility. I wasn't expecting epic fantasy for such a short, easy read, but I felt that an adult fantasy novel should take its reader a bit more seriously. It was engaging but I almost didn't finish due to the odd pacing of the story.

This was a good trilogy, it started kind of slow, but was a good story!
