The Development of Race Discrimination in the 18th Century

During the 15th and 16th centuries, Europeans realized the existence of America. It was not Christopher Columbus who discovered America, as once widely reported in history books. Many Europeans, such as the Vikings and Irish had already traveled there, and America had existing inhabitants, the Native Americans, who had been living there.

Christopher Columbus would be better remembered as a great marketer. What he did was promote the existence of America to other Europeans and the eastern part of the world, that began its colonization. The European colonists set sail for America in search of riches, to escape religious persecution, diseases, and internal wars. They were on a quest to colonize other lands to begin a better life.

After many voyages, the colonists settled in America. They struggled to survive in the new land and depended upon the Native Americans to show them how to grow sustenance, such as corn, so they would not starve. The British, French, Spaniards, and Portuguese built colonies in America. The colonists fought and killed the Native Americans for land and introduced new diseases from Europe, to which the natives had never been exposed and had little resistance to fight. Eventually, the Native American population dwindled.

The colonists wanted free labor to work on plantations. They first enslaved the Irish, then the Native Americans. Later, because they learned of, and were attracted to, a sophisticated trade network for goods in Africa, the Europeans decided to trade people as well. Africans had a resistance to disease, unlike the Native Americans, and could be kidnapped easily from their home countries in the western parts of Africa. The Europeans used the Africans as the main source of slavery in America. European colonists believed that they could not survive without them.

The colonists had to find a way to rationalize the enslavement of Africans to ease their conscious. They used the Bible for this rationalization, though the Bible never condoned the barbaric treatment of other human beings as slaves. Genesis strongly opposes a negative distinction based on skin color and slavery. There is not a passage in the Bible that says that Africans should be slaves. This was entirely made up by the Europeans as justification for their cruel behavior against Africans. There have been different types of slaves throughout history, but slavery based on race was an 18th-century invention.

Before the 18th century, the image of Africans and other darker skinned races were generally positive. It was the Europeans who changed this view when they colonized America by stealing it from the Native Americans and enslaving Africans to use as free labor. The Europeans who colonized America wanted an easy life, so they created race as a means of distinction, and to use free labor to build their estates. This distinction for Africans was that they were not human and, therefore, inferior. This was their justification to demean, beat, and treat them like animals. The Europeans who colonized America not only helped invent the term race, but used it in a hierarchical classification system to rate darker skinned people as inferior, so they could use them as slaves, and later have unfair advantages and privileges in economy and justice.

How American Society Categorizes Race

Society classifies a person as belonging to particular race based on physical characteristics. There is a distinct look that most people believe categorizes a person’s race or ethnicity. For example, white-colored skin, light eyes, and pointed noses are usually characteristics used to describe the Caucasian race, whereas, darker skin and coiled hair are usually characteristics of the African American race, and so on for other racial classifications.
