Chapter One
She obviously has hearing loss, but I’m not going to be able to tell you if it’s permanent or not. Sometimes a blast so close to the ear like the one she experienced causes temporary trauma to the ear drum. If that’s the case, then her hearing should begin to return within a few weeks. But, the other possibility is that it’s permanent and it won’t ever return.
Lucas had caught up with the doctor and brought him back to Clarissa and Jeremiah’s home. The doctor was talking to Jeremiah and Rebecca.
Clarissa was sitting on the cot looking back and forth between her husband and her sister, trying to understand what the doctor was telling them about her. He was looking at them, not at her, and all she could hear was that terrible ringing in her ears. Rebecca was doing a good job of keeping a neutral expression, but Jeremiah looked pained and Clarissa felt worse for him than she did herself.
She reached over and touched her sister’s arm and gestured like she was writing; she wanted a pen and paper. She saw Rebecca look at Lucas and say something. He nodded and went over to the little desk that Clarissa and Jeremiah had in the corner of the room. He came back with a piece of stationary, a pen and an ink well. He handed it to Clarissa and she said, Thank you, Lucas.
She handed them to Jeremiah then and said, Please don’t leave me out. This is about me. I need to understand what is happening. I remember being on my way to Rebecca’s...I don’t know what else happened to me.
Jeremiah looked at the doctor and then at Rebecca. They both nodded. He took the paper over to the desk and wrote on it. A few minutes later he brought it back to Clarissa. It said, You were bitten by a rattler. Colton killed it, sucked out the poison and brought you home. The doctor thinks that you can’t hear because of the gunshot so close to your ears.
Will it come back?
she said. Will I be able to hear again?
Colton saved my life?
The doctor looked at her and said, Maybe,
but in case she didn’t understand that, he shrugged his shoulders. She was trying not to panic, she could hear ringing, and that was something...right?
I can hear ringing in them,
she said. Is that a good sign?
He shrugged again and made a face as if to say he were sorry. She felt bad because she knew he was only there to help her, and he was being as honest as he could, but she wanted to slug him. She looked back at the paper again and then at her husband, Colton saved my life?
she said, aloud this time.
Jeremiah smiled and nodded; he looked proud. She smiled back at him, and then she looked at her sister and said, Where’s my nephew?
Rebecca sat down next to her and hugged her tight. I’m so glad you’re okay,
she said. Then she remembered that Clarissa couldn’t hear her. She took her face between her hands and looking right at her she said, I love you, little sister.
Clarissa smiled. I love you too,
she said. She looked around the room then and said, Where’s Colton?
Jeremiah shook his head to indicate that he didn’t know. He glanced at Rebecca and Clarissa saw the subtle exchange between them. He was worried about his son. Go find him,
she said.
Jeremiah shook his head no and said something that she assumed was, I’m not leaving you.
Please go, I’ll worry too if you don’t.
Jeremiah resisted, but finally after Rebecca assuring him she wouldn’t leave until he got back, he agreed to go. He kissed Clarissa, just a peck because of the audience they had. Jeremiah wasn’t bold about things like that, even though they had been married for several months now. Clarissa hugged him tight and told him she loved him again.
She thanked the doctor too, who was leaving with Jeremiah. When they were gone, she turned back to her sister and said, Go home to my nephew.
Rebecca stubbornly sat down next to her and refused. Lucas smiled and said, I’ll go.
They were all making eye contact with her and enunciating their words. Clarissa understood. She took Lucas’s hand in hers and said, Thank you for everything.
He smiled and said, You’re welcome, sister.
Once Lucas was gone, Clarissa turned to her sister and said, I was coming to see you.
Rebecca nodded and said, I know. I’m sorry.
Clarissa laughed, It’s not your fault silly. You didn’t even invite me. I was coming because I think I might be pregnant, but I’m not sure.
Rebecca’s face lit up and she clapped her hands together. Hugging Clarissa again she said, Did you miss your time of the month?
Clarissa nodded. Only once?
She nodded again.
Okay, that’s a good sign, but we should wait for one more miss before we get too excited, okay? You understand?
Clarissa nodded. She put her arm around her sister and with their heads together they just sat there for a few minutes before Clarissa told her, Please go home with your husband and to your son. I have ringing in my ears, otherwise I’m fine. Please.
Rebecca knew that it would do no good to argue with her stubborn little sister...
Okay,
she told her, but I’m sending Lucas to check on you in a few hours.
Clarissa smiled and nodded, hugging her sister again.
***************
Jessica and Clint’s ride home from church would have been completely silent if not for the incessant chatter of the children. They’d been home over two hours now and Clint hadn’t said one word to Jessica since they left the church, since he’d found her sitting out back with Colton’s head in her lap. She wished that he would say anything. She wished that he would yell and scream at her...even if he got angry enough to shake her...she couldn’t stand this silent treatment though, it was killing her. She fed the kids and got them changed out of their Sunday clothes, such as they were...then she sent them out to play and put the baby down for a nap.
Turning to their father who was sitting silently at the table, going through some kind of paperwork she said, Can we just talk about it? I can’t stand this silent treatment any longer.
He looked up at her; it was a smoldering, almost frightening look. Really?
he said. I’m so sorry, Jessica. I certainly would never want to do anything to make you feel uncomfortable. Just as I’m sure you didn’t want me and the rest of the community inside the church to know you were outside in the arms of another man while we sang Alleluia.
"It wasn’t like that, Clint.
