About this ebook

A short tale of suspense set at Pembrook High.

Everyone expects Brianne Pratt to plan the scariest Halloween dance ever, but she's facing a few challenges. School authorities want to keep the theme too tame. Her folks don't like her college boyfriend who's coming back for the evening, and worst of all, someone's watching.

Someone's spying on Brianne, sneaking messages into her locker and placing strange phone calls that make it clear her secret admirer won't give up easily.

Even if she can navigate the treacherous waters of school politics and pull off a wild and exciting Halloween event, she's worried she could be the real focus of the horror on the big night.

Also includes sample chapters of the Pembrook High novel The Gift.

    About the Author

    1.

The first note arrived after Brianne Pratt’s picture appeared in the school newspaper and blog in early October.

Just a few words scribbled on a scrap of spiral notebook paper but enough to make her nervous. The tone wasn’t really threatening, just, well, creepy, especially since it had been slipped surreptitiously through a slot in her locker door.

"I thought you looked very nice in the paper. Maybe we could share a dance this Halloween."

It was signed simply An Admirer.

Brianne would not have thought twice about it except that in seventh grade a guy had considered her so cute that he had to call her constantly and breathe, making a general nuisance of himself.

She couldn’t see cute when she checked the mirror. She had long dark hair she considered too wavy. The smile was a nice smile, but she didn’t see a Seventeen cover in the tea leaves.

The note couldn’t have come at a worse time. Leaves were turning, and she had a Halloween dance to plan with battles to fight on that front. The faculty advisor, Mrs. Berry, who was usually pretty cool, was taking a hard line on the horror and gore factor in the decorations with heavy goth restrictions imposed. Her chain was being yanked by someone higher up the ladder, but she kept saying things like: Can’t we just keep it ghostly and suggestive? Maybe a Victorian theme.

"We’re not creating The Jane Austen Experience,"
