    LOVE ACROSS THE MILES

    Book Five of a Series

    by

    Cara Rose

    Chapter ONE

Rosie’s clients in Australia often requested exclusive antique items. Each day she would trail through the net looking for specific rare items, checking online forums, auction houses and so on. Some of her finds were from the occasional garage sale. She would often jet overseas to secure something important, often on a minutes’ notice.

Luckily over the years she had a number of contacts around the world always looking. When needed, they would secure such items on her behalf, although she really preferred to view and touch them herself before placing bids.

Brett in the UK had called that morning to let her know he had found a vase, one she had been seeking for a long time, and it was to go to auction in a week. He advised that the information came from an inside contact who said they were talking with the current owner at the moment. Rosie was so excited – it was a piece she had been after for a while to complete her own private Mythology collection. This Grecian Urn was a Greek vase that symbolised Keats presumption of eternal life.

So when she advised Brett she would be coming over he suggested she stay at his country home in Surrey, and she could have the use of the car as well.

‘Oh Brett, that is so kind of you but are you sure it’s okay? I won’t be putting you out?’

‘Rosie, I am sure you won’t be putting me out, my girlfriend and I had planned to go on holidays somewhere anyway, so the cottage is all yours.’

‘In that case Brett, please let me return the favour, I have a shack on the seafront at Glenelg in Adelaide and you are most welcome to stay for the week. How does that sound?’

‘Wow, are you sure? Yes, yes that would be great, I … we have never been to Australia, the promised land as you Aussies call it. We would love to, so yes please … done deal!’ Excited, he called Debra straight away.

‘Deb, we are going to Australia for the week…. Yes, yes, it is all organised,’ he almost shouted done the phone, ‘we are estate swapping with one of my Australian contacts, she is going to stay at the cottage in Oxshott and we in her home. I think she called it in Adelaide by the sea!’

Deb squealed with delight and the plan was set in motion. Brett and Rosie swapped addresses, and information ready for the coming week.

Rosie arrived in the UK on a cold frosty morning, Heathrow Airport was a buzz. She hailed a taxi providing him with the information and address details. The taxi driver was a little taken back that she wanted to use his services all the way to Surrey. It was after all an hour’s drive from Heathrow… she reassured him that was fine, she didn’t want to hire a car because she would have one to use during her stay once she arrived at her destination.

    CHAPTER TWO

Arriving at the so-called cottage, Rosie had to check the address twice, he did say cottage or was it country cottage? Yes that’s it, that's what he said, yet this place was anything but a cottage… the taxi pulled up at the gate and she swiped the card he had left for her to collect at the airport and it worked so this must be it…The taxi driver carried her bag up to the door and she paid him a little extra for his kindness. He had given her some tips on places to visit during her stay and must-sees of England.

She swiped the same card in the door and it opened.

‘Wow,’ escaped her mouth, what a place, it was absolutely amazing; all lovingly decorated in cottage country old homestead style, like something you would see in a 'life' magazine, only the best of everything. The stylish drapes, cushions, lounge chairs, rugs were all in rich fabrics and colours of the finest threads. There was the carved oak wood fireplace in the corner. Oh, how she loved that idea, she couldn’t wait to light it up, sit down and read a good book in front of it. So yes, that would be the plan for the night…

Now let’s see, Brett said she could have the guest room second door on the left; she went in to put her bag down. Opening the door, she was met with green and gold velvet coverings, and a large beautiful hand carved rosewood four poster bed…she gasped. ‘OMG.’ escaped her mouth, she would imagine this would be the type of room fit for a queen. She walked over to sit on it, her whole body melted into the lavender smelling quilted top. She was sure she got the better deal for sure, he was going to find her shack quite boring compared with this place… even if it was on the beachfront. It was simply styled for ease of use, nothing special as far as she was concerned.

She made her way back out of the room and found her way to the cottage galley kitchen, it was perfect and very much a working country style kitchen. Out of the window she could see a veggie garden and what looked like an herb garden surrounded by cottage flowers.

‘Perfect,’ she could see that this was going to be an enjoyable week indeed. Now all she needed was a cup of tea and to sit down and plan her week. The kettle boiled and she opened the fridge, no milk…bugger, she could easily have drank tea without milk, but she would need some in the morning, so she may as well go find some in the local town.

Esher was the closest town she remembered passing through on the way in with the taxi driver. Brett had said she could use the car in the garage, he said the swipe key was universal and it would open the garage door. The key to the car he said was in it.

She walked over to the garage door and swiped the door, the large doors immediately slide across from the middle to fold into the sides and the light came on. She stood there dumbfounded. Looking around, surely he didn’t mean she could drive this car… not that she didn’t like it, but well it wasn’t the kind of car you lent to a complete stranger… and all she left at his disposal was the Range Rover, a nice new car for sure, but by no means a yellow Lamborghini!

‘Christ,’ she walked over and ran her finger up the bonnet as she made her way around to the driver’s door to peer in, she was a little surprised but the key was in it… She squealed with delight, she’d never driven a Lamborghini. She opened the door as if it would break. It opened upwards and she slide in, the smell of the leather all elegantly stitched in black and gold, the Targa black top, the gauges, the feel of the steering wheel under her fingers.

‘OMG,’ she said out loud once more. She turned the key and it roared into life. ‘Okay, I am in love… must have one for my next toy,’ she said to herself breathlessly.

She bit her lip feeling a little guilty… of course she still loved her Maserati Quattropate. It was the one for which she had only recently traded in the silver 2009 model. The 2015 model she purchased was in fiery red – it was an extension of the way she felt at this stage in her life; a little more risky. She smiled, but this car made a different kind of statement, it asked to be driven and fast… And she could not wait to put pedal to the metal to see what this baby had to offer.

She slowly drove to the front gate and they opened automatically, remembering the way she had come she set off towards Esher. The roads were good and the car handled beautifully around the tight corners, she sat on between 60 to 80 kms on the drive into Esher to get used to the way the car handled. She arrived in the village and exited from the drive door. People seemed to take an interest in the car; she wondered if they knew it to be Brett’s and they might be questioning why she was in it. The lady in the milk bar mentioned it was a nice car but that was it, so she thanked her and drove off with her fresh milk and crusty bread. She would have to do more shopping tomorrow, because right now she was looking forward to a cup of tea, a good book and of course sitting in front of that open fire.

On the way back she wanted to see what this 'Lambo' could do, so she pushed it a little further. She loved the response, a slight touch of the accelerator and the baby threw her back in her seat. The Lamborghini handled beautifully at speed and took each corner perfectly so she decided to push it a little more, before she knew it, she was roaring around each corner flattening it as she pulled out of each curve in the road. What joy it was to drive, it handled like a car on rail tracks … responsive too.

Then suddenly out of nowhere came a black car right up behind her, it sat on her tail as she applied more speed to make some space between them. This guy must be nuts she thought he isn’t leaving much room for error, but not to be outdone she drove even faster. The black car stayed with her, she concentrated on the road, worried that if she missed a corner the car would be totalled and it wasn’t even her car.

‘Shit,’ she said under her breath. She had to try and slow it all up. She tried to ease off the accelerator, but not too much in case the car hit her from behind. She glanced in the rear vision mirror only to look back at the road in front to find a deer ran across in front. She swerved quickly and missed it, but the black car didn’t quite have time. She watched it swerve and losing control it spun out to the side of the road and into a tree.

‘OMG,’ she screamed as she spun her car around to go back and see if the driver was okay.

She jumped out and ran over towards the car, someone was cursing big time as she approached, he didn’t seem to happy, and guessing by the look of the front of the car it would cost a pretty penny to fix… as she neared the front car door she heard him swear.

‘Brett, what the fuck do you call that?’

She looked at the driver, ‘Sorry, not Brett, are you okay? Can I help or did you want me to call an ambulance or a tow truck or someone, your wife maybe?’ She spoke fast, nervous all of a sudden.

She peered in a little closer and met striking green fiery eyes, she took a step back to reassess, and maybe she best just go back to her car and call an ambulance. He stopped cursing as soon as she came into vision. One look at her silenced him. He met her concerned chocolate brown eyes, her golden shoulder length hair and was instantly smitten. Her scent waffled across from where she stood, she smelt of musk and strawberries. What a striking woman, his mind raced, to assess this vision of loveliness …not from around here and she spoke funny… her golden healthy skin and full kissable lips… what was she doing in Brett’s car, was she his latest… no, not possible, he thought he was happy with Debra…

His features softened a little. ‘Can you help me out, I seem to have twisted my ankle.’

A little wary she stepped closer again. She licked her top lip, god he smelt good. Catching her thoughts, she quickly turned her mind back to the situation at hand. ‘Wait, I’ll see if I can find you a branch.’

She came back with a stick with a fork to help him support his weight. ‘Here you go,’ she said as she handed it to him tentatively, still unsure of being in close proximity to this green eyes stranger.

He eased out of the car trying to support his weight on the side panel, seeing he was having trouble she leant down to help him out, and allowed him to take support on her shoulder as he hopped out on his right foot. She helped place the branch under his armpit to keep his left leg off the ground. He groaned a little in pain as he did. When he stood up she realised he was very tall indeed, and judging by the weight he had on her shoulder he weighed at least 110… She held on to steady him a moment taking in his sheer size, he had massive hands and from what she could feel from where her hands rested on his hips for support he was well toned under those clothes.

She swallowed, her throat suddenly dry as she braved another look up to his jade green eyes. Unsure what more to say and then needed to break the spell between them. ‘Can I get you to a hospital, I am not sure where one is but if you could give me directions, we could drive there,’ she said hesitating at each word.

    He was still analysing the
