Minimalist - Bert Garza
INTRODUCTION
Living with fewer belongings is one of the key aspects that are emphasized by the minimalist lifestyle. In modern society there are people who like to have material possessions, however there are many people within our various communities who would rather live with fewer belongings. People are looking to live their lives like minimalists. They would rather live with less clutter around their homes and workplaces. The more space created within their homes and working environments, the better and lighter their frame of minds and health could be.
This type of lifestyle implies to a large extent, the rejection of the consumerist attitude and disposition to life and acquisitions. This is as a result of the fact that the minimalist only has few material items. They do not possess a lot of material objects. They do not see the need for such possessions and are never caught in the web of trying to acquire things. They will try to get rid of anything that may detract them from the important tasks of their life. Keeping their possessions at the barest minimum is one of the more effective methods of being able to keep their lives on track and in order. They find more freedom in this lifestyle, and freedom in turn creates more happiness and satisfaction with life.
The minimalist lifestyle may be based on the personal preferences of an individual. It is possible to decide what habits and practices you wish to follow and put in place in order to get the maximum benefits that are possible from your kind of lifestyle. There are lots of benefits that can be gained by the practice of a minimalist lifestyle. Some of the benefits have been highlighted and discussed in this book, but there are many more out there. A key benefit on which most of the other benefits are hinged on is that the minimalist lifestyle has been proven to help individuals who practice it to enhance their personal growth and to also offer several options and tips on how to get rid of excess material items.
Main Components of the Minimalist Lifestyle
If you would like to obtain the maximum benefits possible from practicing a minimalist’s lifestyle, then you need to know about and understand the important components of the minimalist system of living.
Minimalist Orientation
The first thing to note from a minimalist lifestyle is the orientation and frame of mind. It will be very difficult to practice a minimalist lifestyle without first developing the minimalist orientation. A person who does not believe in going light cannot successfully practice a minimalist lifestyle. Such people would like to have several things and possessions around them. A minimalist orientation on the other hand, has an integrated set of beliefs that upholds the attributes of minimalism. This stands as the key attribute evident in all they do and how they go about achieving it.
Reduced Possessions
The first and the most important component of the minimalist lifestyle is to do with reducing the amount of clutter from having too many possessions. This is achieved by discarding the possessions that they consider unnecessary or unimportant. This aspect of minimalism is the most obvious change in their lifestyle. A minimalist is able to learn and adapt to maintaining survival with minimal possessions. This is not expected to be achieved overnight, but by discarding excess material objects regularly, it is eventually possible. In order words, a minimalist gets used to the word ‘few’ and lives by that word when it comes to material possessions. By removing the unnecessary items from the house, a minimalist can instead learn to use the natural resources in their environment to gain all the benefits.
Having too many material possessions isn’t just about stopping yourself from purchasing new items. Often we are given items, or we inherit them. These can be the hardest to refuse or get rid of. Some people find they have an emotional or sentimental attachment to an item. If it means that much to you, then by all means keep it. But, make sure you don’t think of every item in this way. Think carefully about each one. A good tip is to imagine there is a fire in your house and you have to grab the things that are most important to you. What would you take? These are the things you should keep.
Reduced Expenses
A minimalist has a key advantage that is often a struggle for someone who does not practice minimalism. This is the advantage of being able to reduce unnecessary expenses. When expenses are reduced, the ability to save becomes possible and enhanced. Most people tend to notice lots of advertisements on a daily basis, whether they are on television, radio, the newspaper or magazines. These advertisements often try to sell the idea of portraying sophistication in your lifestyle. Many people want to prove that his/her product is the most important for your life and quality of living. Of course this is the major motive behind most if not all advertisements.
These advertisements can lead you into the habit of impulsive buying. Sometimes, people are even lured into buying these products with promises of improved health and beauty. Some people go as
