A Cup of Danger - Jennifer Conner

Excerpt from A Cup of Danger

    Why does that matter?

"Because, well...I’m attracted to you, and it does matter. Cougar. Cradle robber. There are a few terms."

I’m twenty-eight, and I’ve read that you’re thirty-five. His smile was warm and lit his forest green eyes and thick lashes. I believe there are more years between you and Martin.

It seems to be acceptable with men.

That’s malarkey. Seven years is not a gap, and anyway, I don’t see age. I’ve been with women younger, and I’ve been with women older. It’s about the chemistry I have with someone and not their age. With the sun glinting off his inky hair, she looked up into his face and saw nothing but the truth. He was as attracted to her as she was to him.

Who would want me? Seriously. If I left Martin, who would want me? she repeated. After she had said it, she realized it sounded like a lead in line. I didn’t mean it like that.

You shouldn’t worry so much. Calen grew pensive "To use your word, seriously? You are one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen, and to answer your question, I would want you." He pulled her to her feet and then cupped her face. Her brain screamed that this was one of the worst ideas in her life, but her body betrayed her.

He gave her a moment to stop him and protest, but when she didn’t, he pulled her against him and kissed her. At first, it was just a gentle touch of their lips. His mouth was warm and tasted of a hint of blackberries in the wine he’d drunk earlier. Her head tipped back and her mouth opened in invitation.

Calen ran a hand up her back and under her hair to gently pull as he deepened the kiss. This was no first date kiss, but then again this wasn’t a date. Liv let a soft sigh escape. It had been so long...had Martin ever kissed her like this? Calen set off a spark that ignited her whole body. She ran her hands up his muscled forearms and wondered how his body would feel, naked, against her. She wanted it to last. Remember the feel of him against her. She inhaled the spicy male scent of him which made her heady.

Recently, the online retail mega company was accused of forcing its employees into a soul crushing 60-hour work week. This leader is also known for overwhelming their competition.

In Seattle Billionaires – A Cup of Danger what would drive a person that is chasing one of these mega local companies. If you were number two, what would you do? Chapter One

Rotting from the inside out, Livia Kane felt more and more like she was becoming the Portrait of Dorian Gray. The rare energy she’d felt twenty minutes earlier teaching music to a group of low-income kids had dissipated. Now, there was nothing left between her and her soul. Nothing, unless you counted her sixty-thousand-dollar car, half-a-grand dress, a few more thousand in jewelry and Miu Miu shoes. She’d sold her soul for things, and now she paid for it.

Liv inched her Firenze Red Land Rover up into the valet parking line in front of Rodizio’s. Of all the cars Martin owned, she liked the Land Rover the best. It fit into Seattle’s green, and outdoorsy feel much better than one of his sports cars. They were too flashy for her.

As she hit the button to put down her window to talk to the valets out front, the smell of fresh flowers wafted in. Seattle was having one of the driest summers on record, but yesterday was stereotypical weather, the rain Seattle was best known for. But today again, the sun was out. Everything smelled clean and renewed from the rain and seemed greener. Her roses would love the extra water. She tapped a manicured nail on the steering wheel as the couple in the car in front got out and handed over their keys.

She looked forward to her luncheons with friends. It seemed like it was the same conversations week in and week out, but at least it gave her something to do. Most women would give up everything for what she had, but she’d found out the hard way, money didn’t always bring happiness.

She shifted the car into park, grabbed her purse and swiveled in the seat just as the valet opened her door.

Mrs. Kane, so nice to see you again. I believe your friends are already inside, the young valet said, as he offered his hand to help her out of the car.

She was a little surprised he remembered her name. Everyone knew her husband, but not many placed her. Yes. She smiled at him. I’m late. Thanks... She looked at his name badge, Luke.

Anything you need, Mrs. Kane. You can just ask. His green eyes sparkled, and his gaze dropped for a moment longer than it should on her mouth and then traveled down to her cleavage.

Oh. My. God. He’s checking me out! How old could he possibly be? She knew the restaurant hired a lot of college kids from the University of Washington for summer help and she guessed he was one of them. This made him legal, and he is cute. Like a puppy’s cute. He can’t be over twenty. You have got to be kidding. She tried to squelch her smile and not look as flattered as she felt.

Instead, Liv decided to raise an eyebrow his direction, but when was the last time a man looked at her with a twinkle in his eye and a sexy grin? She’d been married to Martin since she was eighteen. That was seventeen years ago. How could time have flown this quickly? Now she was thirty-five and long past her sex-kitten days. Martin married her for her beauty, but thirty-five for a trophy wife was "the new eighty-year-oldˮ.

She snapped back from her thoughts. The young man still held out his hand as he waited for the keys. Liv’s cheeks heated as she dropped the ring into his grasp.

Thanks. Have a nice lunch. If you call ahead when you’re finished, I can have your car waiting for you to save time. He handed her a card with the valet number for the restaurant complex. He winked at her, as he jumped in her car and drove off toward the parking garage.

Still flattered, Liv sighed and then gave herself a mental slap. He doesn’t want me. What would I have to offer a younger man? It’s all about the money. Everything is all about the money. She guessed he figured out by schmoozing rich housewives, he’d get a bigger tip. Well, it worked. Liv reminded herself to get two tens when she paid for lunch. Ten for the car pick up and ten additional dollars if he winked at her again.

Liv sauntered through the high glass and gold double front entryway doors of the restaurant. She was greeted by the hostess who recognized her and led her through the tables to where her friends sat. As she came closer, Anarose was the first to spot her and wave.

We wondered where the heck you were. I was starting to worry. Anarose scooted her chair a little to the right to make room for Liv to sit with the other four.

Knowing they were regulars, the waiter rushed over. It looks like your group is a little cramped. Can I get you a larger table?

No, this will be fine. We’re just cozy, Jacy laughed. "But, I’ll take another white wine. One for
