The Self-Initiation of the Witch Chironex

About this ebook
Ted is considered by most people who know him to be steady, dependable and dull. He loves his wife, the Green Lady, who is a powerful witch. He hates his job, and remains ambivalent about religion. He drinks only socially, does not smoke or swear, and has never even contemplated being unfaithful.
He meets Morgana, a young healer and novice witch, when she first joins the Green Lady’s coven, buys a weed-infested block of land, and lives there in self-imposed exile to avoid any possible sexual entanglements.
While walking on the beach, he meets a twelve year old girl, Rebecca. Their friendship develops out of mutual loneliness, but such a young friend can never be relied on when he really needs help.
His religious conversion comes when he sees the full moon rising and plunges naked in the sea to revel in the beauty of the night. He is stung by box jellyfish and meets the Goddess. The Goddess informs him that he has been selected for greatness, and that he is to be called “Chironex” in honour of the jellyfish that brought him to her.
Morgana achieves her moment of greatest intimacy with her intended lover while removing the venomous tentacles from Ted’s naked body, under the intense gaze of his jealous wife.
Chironex is no more able to solve the problems of his private life than Ted was, and again retreats to his block of land. Although the two lovers avoid all contact with each other, the Green Lady’s consuming jealousy develops into a self-destructive rage. While ranting about Chironex’ infidelities, she loses control of her car and drives off a bridge.
Morgana blames herself for the Green Lady’s death, and avoids all contact with the coven. Chironex becomes more isolated than ever, even his little friend Rebecca moves away. His mental health deteriorates under the weight of depression and growing dependence on alcohol until he finally meets with the Horned God.
Graeme Buckley
Graeme Buckley was born in Cairns in 1957. His love of the sea was nurtured early by his father and by Dr. Barnes, the family doctor, a renowned Marine Biologist who did important research on box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri). Graeme studied visual arts in Townsville in 1979/80 where he met the love of his life. They moved to Adelaide in 1981 to continue their art studies, and attended the first of several writing courses at this time. After a time in Gympie they returned to Townsville in 1989. In 2002 he received a BSc. in Marine Biology from James Cook University in Townsville. His interest in Pagan spirituality came from an understanding that that all life as we know it is composed of matter of the Earth powered by the energy of the Sun. He realized that it could be a valid scientific analogy to refer to the Earth as ‘Mother’ and the Sun as ‘Father’. The Self-Initiation of the Witch Chironex was written during the ensuing period.
