Chapter 1 –Offensive terms, meaning when the team with the ball is trying to score or has the ball. When a player has the ball, they can either pass, shoot, or dribble. When they don’t have the ball they can screen, pick or move without the ball.
1.Offense- when your team or an individual has the ball and is looking to score.
2.Space out- when players should go to the wing or corner and give the player with the ball the opportunity for an open driving lane or shot.
3.Gravitate or float up- When a player should naturally move up or out to space out and give the player with the ball a natural driving lane or kick out option for a shot.
4.Take em- a term a player or coach uses for the ball handler on offense to take the defender 1on 1 to score.
5.Flash, or Flash in- a term for the offensive player to flash in to the lane or to the ball, so they can get an easy pass inside or the ball at a scoring position.
6.Duck in- a term for the offensive player to duck in the lane to get a short easy pass, similar to flash in but closer to the basket.
7.Small forward-similar to a wing, but can’t shoot that well, but sometimes is the glue guy or a great defender and plays smart. Sometimes a good scorer or very athletic.
8.Hockey assist-the assist before the actual assist. Or the pass that was 1st before the assist came.
9.Stagger-when 2 offensive players set a screen at different times to get a player open
10.Double stagger-when a player comes off 2 screens at separate times to get open
11.Split-when an offensive player with the ball, splits 2 defender to drive or pass the ball
12.Floppy-same as double stagger
13.Run wide- a term used to tell the wings to run out by the sideline and 3 pt. line to get a better angle on the fast break to stay wide in the fast break to draw out the defenders.
14.Rim runs-when a player runs to the front of the rim and post up, or calls for the ball, usually a forward or center will do that.
15.Roll- a term to use after the offensive player without the ball rolls to the basket after or before a pick or screen.
16.Pop- after the pick or before it, the offensive player without the ball pops out to get the ball, maybe out by or to the 3pt line, wing or elbow area.
17.Draw the defender- a term for the offensive player with the ball to drive in the lane and draw their defender or other defenders and then make a pass.
18.Drive and kick- a term used for the offense player with the ball to drive their defender to the basket and then pass the ball to the open player, normally out on the perimeter.
19.Set it up- a term used for the ball hander on offense to call a play in the half court setting.
20.Reset- a term used for the point guard to re -start the play or call a new play in offense.
21.Streak shooter-a player who does not shoot well normally but if makes a few shots then turns into a good shooter
22.Streaky-same as above
23.Use clock- a term for all 5 offensive players to run the play slow to stall and use up the clock to win the game and not score quickly.
24.Be smart- a term used by the coach to tell the team to use a lot of clock on offense and only take a sure lay up or great shot, to not dribble in and shoot wild shots with high risks.
25.You have a count – a term used by the coach or other players to signal the offensive player with the ball, and the ref is counting for a 5 second violation.
26.Stick it- a term when a player makes a shot, or a difficult shot
27.In and out dribble- a move used with 1 hand that brings the ball in front of the defender and then back away, back in the day it was a palming violation, now legal.
28.Go thru- a term that means when a player cuts thru the lane or cuts thru to the basket from a pick or screen or give and go.
29.Moving-when an offensive player is not set to set a pick or screen and is still moving his feet
30.Illegal screen-same as above
31.In and out dribble- a type of dribble used to maneuver the ball inside and then outside to get past the defender.
32.Paint/lane -the area where a player can only be in 3 seconds at a time on offense, usually painted in a rectangle in front of each basket.
33.Perimeter –the area outside by the 3pt line, away from the basket and out of the lane.
34.Twine-a term used for the net, hanging off the rim.
35.Hang the net-a term to mean when a player shoots the ball and makes it, and the net pops up on the rim, usually meaning a pure swish or perfect swish.
36.Cotton- a term used for the net, hanging off the rim, on a perfect make or swish.
37.Silk- a term used for the net that hangs off the rim.
38.Bucket-the term used for the rim or basket.
39.Tin- the term used for the rim or the goal.
40.Panties or draw’s- another term to identify the net when a player makes a perfect swish
41.Back door cut – a move when the offensive player without the ball cuts towards the basket to receive the ball behind the defender.
42.V-cut- to go back and forth to get the ball from your offensive player who receives the ball off a pass from the player who has the ball.
43.Curl cut- a move the offensive player uses who does not have the ball to go out, then curl towards the basket to receive the pass from the player who has the ball.
44.Fade- a move the offensive player uses to curl towards the basket and then go away to the corner or wing to receive the ball from the player who has the ball.
45.Entry pass-the pass to the wing or post to start the offense or get the ball to a player to score.
A-Eyes make shots- when a player has to keep their eyes on the basket to make the shot
46.2 for 1, when a team that is playing with a shot clock in the game and shoots quick in order to get another possession in the game clock. Typically this is done only in the NBA since they have a shot clock, but now starting to spread in the college game.
47.Eye hole- a slang term when the offensive player shoots a long jump shot or makes a tough shot when the defender is playing close.
48.Free throw- a term used to shoot
