Sick birthday! Sam, Noah, and Emilio battled their way through the crowd at the San Diego Padres baseball game. Sam was a big fan, but this was the first time he was going to see the Padres in person. Thanks for inviting us, Noah. This is great.

Sure. Noah wore the shades Sam had just given him for his eleventh birthday. They were the same age now.

As they got in line for nachos, Sam noticed a man in dress pants and a pink shirt strolling away from them. A note card slipped out of the man’s back pocket as he walked. The card fluttered into the air, landed on its corner and settled to the concrete. The man kept walking.

I’ll be right back. Sam dodged a few fans to retrieve the card. It was blank except for the name Mack and a phone number scrawled in pencil. He looked up to see the man in the pink shirt opening a glass door. Sir! You dropped something.

I know. A man dropped this, Sam held up the card. He went inside. He had a pink—

Get out of here. The guard’s look could have broken bricks. Go watch the game. The guard sniffed and wiped at his nose, like he had allergies, something Sam was all too familiar with.

Sam! Emilio waved him over. He and Noah stood at the counter, ready to order.

Coming! Sam shoved the note card into his back pocket. He would come back later. Maybe the guard would be in a better mood. When he turned away from The Premiere Club, Sam bumped into a girl. I’m sorry, he said.

She was a little taller than he, with long brown hair. It’s okay. She smiled, calm amid the bustle of noisy fans. She seemed like a nice person. The man standing next to her was very muscular. He had dark skin, a large nose and a wide chin, and he looked like he was angry. Sam smiled weakly and rejoined his friends. It was the day
