Preface

An illusion maybe, or just a spark in my eye as I gaze into the future and somehow, I arrive in the past. I can see as far, and as long as living goes, but dying? Dying, I don’t understand. It’s a reality I shall never know.

Here in the dark, I find myself again. I also find an ancient evil. Its curling talons bring me forth to a darker age, which I see into forever. Somehow I find that beast.

Is it a part of me?

Or another?

Terror fills my veins. Where can I go to escape? Into the hills or onto the sea? Have my eyes brought me the entire truth, or to the very edge of a lie?

Bring me out, I say. Let the light flow in and bring me with you to eternity. I repeat this endlessly into the darkness, into the void as hope for an end to my loneliness. I wait while the centuries turn but I never hear an answer to my plea.

Once, I thought I heard a voice call to me, but it was only my own words echoing back. You cannot escape. You will never escape from the beast within.

DODGER STADIUM, LOS Angeles California, 2010

The invigorating, salty aroma of popcorn drifted through the ranks of fans. Up and over the seats, streaming past where beers sloshed sideways from the stadium-logoed paper cups, held high for that crowd-rippling wave.

This memorable scent moved forward, fueled by an investable tang of twisted human energy, wrapping itself around the cheers that roared from all around. The clamor grew to deafening while the scent-jogging journey evolved into a tangible memory of America's favorite pastime.

Most of the audience came for a day of cheering for their team, to drink their fill of beer and satisfy their pent-up rage. To relieve their daily stress and get their ever-loving tickets worth. To be part of the crowd, part of the noise with many opportunities to joyously cuss a blue streak.

He was there, standing to the back of the crowd, while they cheered their teams on. Wide shoulders pushed at him and jeers rose over his head. Tommy didn't care about baseball or team spirit. He wasn’t even aware that any other being existed. His focused gaze never left the blonde woman while his pulse pounded like a living drum and his palms itched with anticipation.

Her corn silk hair sparkled in the LA sunlight, as she lowered her head to hear what her date whispered to her ear.

Tommy watched her sweet mouth whisper back and he grew hard while he unconsciously licked his dry lips. I will take that mouth. He could even picture that sweet moment, when she would be all his.

A homer in the ninth inning and the home team won, as the crowd roared and they all stood and cheered. More shouts bounced down through the aisles, some were angry while others merrily laughed with victory

I win this game. Tommy concluded as he watched the blonde leave with her boyfriend. I don’t even have to follow because I know where they’re going. To his place, and she’ll come out sometime early in the morning. And when she does, ole Tommy boy will be there, waiting.

He moved slowly and unobtrusively through the crowd, making his way along the stairs. A rather unremarkable man, Tommy stood at five foot six with a medium build, short-cropped dirty blond hair and dull brown eyes.

Invisible! He smirked at the word. They never see me coming and they never notice when I leave. Just like with that redhead last week. A glorious surge of glee pumped through him at the mere thought of that one. What fun! This hobby gave him a feeling of elation, unlike anything in his unremarkable life ever did.

Tommy whistled an old tune as he maneuvered his way to the car. He experienced a peculiar power as though he were truly invisible in the world and therefore, unconquerable. His snickering continued. Yeah, like an invisible villain from some comic book.

He raised his gaze to search for his car and spotted the woman who leaned on his green Buick. A real looker, he thought with a skip of his heart as he lustfully gazed at her.

She was all legs, wearing a bright blue mini-skirt with sexy knee length black, leather boots and a stunning smile. Her dark blue eyes stared directly at him, and Tommy’s muse filled sauntering halted. Invisible, except for today.

The sexy brunette crossed her arms over her chest and kept on smiling.

Thomas Haines felt a twinge of unease while staring at that brilliant smile. He flipped himself around and headed back to the stadium.

Where are you going? Her light cheerful voice rose like a challenge. Thomas?

He stopped in his tracks, swinging back around to gape at her. Uh––what? he stuttered with a nasally squeak.

The smiling beauty uncrossed her arms and stepped forward with her hand extended. I’m Constance, she announced in a sickly-sweet tone.

Tommy looked her body over and appreciated the white silk blouse, which silhouetted her firm breasts. His eyes dropped to her out stretched hand as if he were mesmerized by her blue frosted nails and his stomach lurched with alarming flip-flops of dread.

She lowered her hand and her smile evaporated. I really don't think that you’ll be keeping that appointment with your sexy, little blonde. She gave him a blue-eyed wink.

He took a stunned step back. I don't understand.

Oh, don't bother with denials. She placed a frosted fingernail up to her eye. I can see you plain as day, Tommy Boy!

Who are you?

She’s your conscience, my sick, little friend, a man called out from behind him.

He spun around and spotted the owner of the voice.

A tall, well-built man stood a few feet away in a slightly wrinkled but expensive suit. He possessed an engaging smile and his dark cold eyes sparked with wicked humor. Although, I doubt if your conscience has her good looks. He motioned his dark head to the leggy brunette.

Thomas really began to sweat and he tried to step to the side.

Now don't get any ideas there, Mr. Haines, the tall man warned.

The dull looking and visible killer drew in an anxious breath as he gawked at the pair of strangers, standing in front of his car.

Constance laughed. He thinks he has a date, Jack.

Oh, yeah? Jack grinned. You got a hot one there, Tommy?

Thomas swung his gaze back and forth while gawking at their faces. Who the hell are you people?

Jack chuckled. We’re you’re guardian angels, Tommy boy.

Yeah, we’re angels. Constance continued to glare at him. The avenging kind.

Thomas shook with trepidation. I don't know you, either of you and I don't––

Jack aimed a silencer tipped gun right between Tommy’s beady brown eyes. Let's just say––that we help people by getting rid of the trash. He cocked the gun with a cold smile.

But I haven't done anything! Tommy defended.

Cut with the innocence crap, that redheaded victim last week? I suppose that wasn’t anything at all, right? Constance accused close to his ear. But, this time Tommy boy? You will disappear––forever.

Thomas jumped and turned to look into her electric blue eyes as she grabbed his arm.

This is the first shifter book I've read. I think that's what it's called? It was a little out there for me, personally. I gave it a chance but it was maybe too beastly ? . Maybe I'll give another a try at some point however more realistic is my thing. Marbling body parts is a bit much for my taste.
