Chapter 1
THE PLANE HAS LANDED
The day had finally arrived. Grandmamma Dalila sang out with excitement.
I am so EXCITED and I just can’t hide it! I’m about to lose control and I think I like it.
Her grandchildren would be arriving in just a few hours and she needed to get to the airport in order to pick them up. Much of the morning had been spent running around in dizzy circles getting their rooms ready and planning their adventurous holiday that they would spend with their grandmother.
It had been quite some time since she had last seen her grandchildren and she was sure they would be feeling as excited, but as overwhelmed, as she was. She certainly didn’t want to be late in fetching them.
She grabbed the keys for her old SUV, briefly looked around at the house ensuring that everything was in order, and then hastily shot out of the front door.
Grandmamma Dalila rushed into the garage, pointed the remote at the big rusty SUV with the over-sized truck tires. HMMMMMMM the little motor hummed as it released the access ladder that was safely stored under the SUV. Grandmamma Dalila stretched her short little legs as high as she could and carefully climbed up the wobbly ladder. She waddled like a duck as she settled behind the huge steering wheel.
UNNNNNNT UNNNNNNNT UNNNNNNT. The SUV spluttered as Grandmamma turned the key in the ignition. Again, she tried.
UNNNNNNT UNNNNNNNT UNNNNNNT. With every tick of the clock, Grandmamma Dalila became more anxious. What to do? What to do?
she scratched her head in a panic. I’ll just have to get out the three-wheeler motorcycle with the sidecar.
But as Grandmamma Dalila started preparing her new mode of transport, she realized that there would surely be too much luggage. She would have to hitch up the old wagon.
With a loud BOOM, the garage spat out the three-wheeler with Grandmamma Dalila perched comfortably on the padded seat. In the shadows, a little mouse coughed and rubbed his eyes. But Grandmamma Dalila had one thing on her mind and that was to get to the airport to collect her grandchildren.
She zoomed up the highway with the wind hitting her face and the old wagon swinging from side to side. She hadn’t felt this happy in a long time. She yelled, Yes! Go girl! You’ve got this!
The three-wheeler finally skidded to a halt after having circled the parking garage at the airport looking for a safe spot. Tick tock, tick tock! With every second that ticked away, Grandmamma Dalila could feel her heart beating in her throat. She really wished the airport were not as crowded as it was. She was running out of time. Surely the children’s planes had already landed.
Ariyah and Dillon were in fact waiting and Grandmamma Dalila could see them standing at the end of the long passage. In her haste to get to them, she skidded across the freshly polished floor almost knocking the porter off his feet. Slow down! No running!
he glared at Grandmamma Dalila, but she just kept on running; nothing was going to stop her, certainly not a talking lizard!
By the time she reached the children, her heart pounded DA DUNT DA DUNT DA DUNT! Ariyah! Dillon!
She gasped, frantically throwing her arms around them. This was the moment she had been waiting for.
Hey! Grandmamma!
Ariyah and Dillon smothered Grandmamma Dalila with hugs and kisses. Dillon could not wait to tell Grandmamma Dalila that the most exciting part of his flight was looking down at the clouds.
They looked like marshmallows, Grandmamma! Big, white, and spongy!
Ariyah was unimpressed and interrupted, Well, I listened to music the whole time. Dillon was getting on my nerves asking so many questions.
"Oh, Ariyah! Dillon was just excited, that's
